So 6.5's will fit in stock openings?
I have heard alot of you say 6.5 component speakers will fit in the stock openings, this requires no cutting or grinding right? What do you do with the left over space on the edges? Did you build a custom plate to house the 6.5? Thanks.

In order to get the 6.5's to fit you have to either buy or make (which is better) a mounting plate. You can use the old 6x8 that your are replacing as a template to cut the mounting plate for and drill holes to put it on the door. I use plexiglass when I do it and I have had people tell me that they use wood, which I may try next time. But which ever you choose make sure it at least 1/4 in thick, or a little more. The thicker the mounting plate the easier time you will have installing the 6.5. It's kinda hard to explain everything, but once you work on it you relize the problems to work around and understand everything better.
But it can be, just patience and some brainpower. ------------------ black 97' x-cab 4x4, 5 speed 4.6, black westin nerf bars, pilot ground searchers, borla SS split rear exhaust, K&N genII, bosch +4 plugs, superchip, flexalite electric fan, v-tech oval side window covers, IAS shocks premier 720, pioneer 6cd changer, 12 premier sub, premier componets, 2 soso amps still to come: new spark plug wires, new rims and tires, maybe a supercharger eventually. |
I've been thinking of switching to a round
speaker as well. Do round speakers actually sound better,or are there just more choices available? I am speaking of coax speakers, not the single driver only component style....any help is appreciated,,,,98 ------------------ 98 F-150 4.6 Litre XLT2wd Ext. cab Yokahama AVS/ST's prarie tan/tan int. If you aren't installing component speakers it isn't worth the trouble IMHO

I just took my factory rears out and replaced them with the 6 1/2" Infinity Kappa's from my other truck. I used the factory plastic speaker holder. I just went to the hardware store and bought some fiber washers and different screws with locking washers so I could use 2 of the existing holes. I bolted the speaker to it from the backside. There is a gap on one side, but my installer friends said it wouldn't make a difference unless I was putting components in.

I agree with 54regcab, if your not gonna install components in not worth it to make the plates for coax. Components make a huge difference in sound over a coax, where as round vs oval coax you won't notice much unless one speaker is much better quality then the other.
