Hawkpilot I see on your webpage you would like to upgrade to aftermaket head unit but don't want ot shell out the cash.
Would you like to swap your factory head for an eclipse? Bought Eclipse cd to replace factory cassette. Like look/feel of the factory deck but Ford too expensive. I put the 6815s in today and am please with the result. Lows are tighter highs are enhanced and clarity is improved.

Has anyone tried the the 6813's (the 2-ways?). They seem to be a great value for the money. I know this seems wierd, but when I listened to the 6813's (2 ways) vs the 6815's (3 ways) the 6813's actually sounded crisper. Has anybody else noticed this?
------------------ |
I personally feel it is absoulutely unnessary to have more than a 2way coax.
I don't hink the extra teewters have much effect on sound. They are just there to look impressive. Try covering the mini tweeter with a piece of cloth you won't hear much difference. Also notice that the top of the line coax are 2way. For that matter components systems are 2way and will leave a 3 or 4way coax in the dust. ------------------ 99 XLT 5.4l reg cab 4 wheel disc/ABS 5 star larait style wheels Toreador red 2tone 3.55 gears 255/70/16 OWL Delta toolbox Eclipse 5340 cd player Memphis ARCS50 component speakers (excellent sound) Sherwood amp subwoofer coming soon More mods as funds become avalible. |
Sorry, I've been on travel for a while.
54, I am running off the factory head unit, no amps. Once I changed out the speakers, I was satisfied with the sound, so I guess I will leave it this way, at least until I decide I need more punch. I might have gone for the 2 ways only, but the 3 ways were in stock at my local dealer the day I decided to buy 'em. Glad my little article helps out. I know if I didn't have the Ford manual that tells how to get the panels off, I'd likely have busted some expensive plastic in the process, so I figured I'd share the info. The beauty of the web, no? ------------------ Hawkpilot - Proud driver of the Silver Beast! See it at www.alienmind.com/f150.html |
Hey 54RegCab,
Where did you put your crossovers when you installed your component speakers? Thanks, Mark G ------------------ '98 XLT 4.6 SC 4x2, Black SB flareside, ARE Tonneau, Lined, Tinted, Deflected, Mini-Disked, Amped, Subbed 2x12, K&Ned, B-B-B-M-F Goin' thru tires fast. |
Hawkpilot, I purchased a Pioneer DEH P4000 head unit with the built in alarm. I had to wire into the interior light (a light that comes on when the door is opened) so I went to the light on the door panel. Thanks to your step by step it took me about 30 minutes to get the door panel off tie into the light and put it all back together. Thanks again, just another reason this site is the best one out there.

MarkG,
I mounted them on the side inpact beam behind the midbass. (behind where stock speaker was) Please note that the 99 and 98 have different door panels and I think the speakers are in different locations. If you are putting the tweeter in the door mount xover in door. If you are putting tweeters in kick panels or dash put xover in dash. ------------------ 99 XLT 5.4l reg cab 4 wheel disc/ABS 5 star larait style wheels Toreador red 2tone 3.55 gears 255/70/16 OWL Delta toolbox Eclipse 5340 cd player Memphis ARCS50 component speakers (excellent sound) Sherwood amp subwoofer coming soon More mods as funds become avalible. Thank you 54RegCab,
I was going to get the qforms (kick panel)but after looking at them and at their price I couldn't justify it. They will go into the doors. ------------------ '98 XLT 4.6 SC 4x2, Black SB flareside, ARE Tonneau, Lined, Tinted, Deflected, Mini-Disked, Amped, Subbed 2x12, K&Ned, B-B-B-M-F Goin' thru tires fast. |
MarkG try to put teeters high in the door if possible.
I think they sound better there in my 99. Try a few different temporary locations before making any holes in the door panel. You may prefer the sound of the tweeters mounted on the adapter plate with the midbass or on the "sail" panel. Let your ears be the guide. See component speaker location threads. Yeah, I had to pass on the costly Qforms also Someone even posted something a while back about them being kinda cheaply made and not really fitting that well. ------------------ 99 XLT 5.4l reg cab 4 wheel disc/ABS 5 star larait style wheels Toreador red 2tone 3.55 gears 255/70/16 OWL Delta toolbox Eclipse 5340 cd player Memphis ARCS50 component speakers (excellent sound) Sherwood amp subwoofer coming soon More mods as funds become avalible. |
Hawkpilot; if you read this and you don't mind answering a few questions for me, please fire me an email.
bfriesen@falcon.csc.calpoly.edu I wanted to ask you a few quick questions about speaker upgrades. Either that, or maybe someone on here could answer my question. I'm thinking about putting a pair of the 6815s in the front and 6813s in the rear? Would this be a good combo? ------------------ 1999 Lariat SuperCab Flareside, Amazon Green with Silver trim, 5.4L, 4x2, 4 wheel disc/ABS, 3.55 limited slip, towing package, fog lamps, sliding rear window, captains chairs, keyless entry with alarm, spray-on bed liner, bug guard, and K&N. http://www.csc.calpoly.edu/~bfriesen/truck.html [This message has been edited by Freezer (edited 09-10-1999).] |
FREEZER-That's exactly what I did. I put 6815's in the front and 6813's in the rear, and it worked out just fine. To tell you the truth though, you could probably get away with leaving the stock speakers in the rear doors. The reason is the rear door speaker locations are low in the door right opposite the back seat, and the soft seat material absorbs 99% of your treble anyway. I would try just the 6815's in the front first and see if you're satisfied with that before you spent the money on the 6813's for the rear. I would leave your stock speakers in the rear and spend the money on some suface mount tweeters to mount in the sail panels.

If youre going to buy tweeters buy them first before the 6815s.
You will get the treble you are looking for. I did this in my van and it made all the difference. I left the stock speakers in the van. They were even more pathetic than the Ford speakers. Sounds great with the tweeters. |
Well I made the upgrade this weekend. Put 6815s in the front and 6813s in the rear. Can I tell a difference? Yeah, a little. Do I feel it was worth $180? Probably not. I guess I'm a little disappointed. But not at those speakers. I guess this just justifies my original feelings, the stock speakers were good enough for me. Oh well, I'm still going to enjoy my new speakers which are a slight improvement.

Freezer you would have been happier with the tweeeters.
It's not that you were so happy with stock but IMHO most coax are not a whole lot better than stock. Its actually more of a poor location problem than a speaker quality problem. Those highs just have a tough time making it past the factory grill at the bottom of the door. By time the highs make it to your ears theres not much left. I too tried Kicker 5x7 coax for the "easy fit" solution and ended up taking them back for a components set and I must say the components blew me away compared to the coax. Going from stock to coax made a slight difference but not much. Maybe take the Pioneers back for some coax or add some tweeters high in the door. Good luck. |
I am interested in the Pioneer speaker swap. Another post suggested buying them from Audio Etcetera ( www.audio-etcetera.com ), since the TS-6815's are only $64.95. Crutchfield lists them for $99. I like Crutchfield's service and support, but not thier high prices, so I called and asked if they would match the lower price. They said no because Audio Etcetera is not an authorized Pioneer "online" vendor and I might be getting factory seconds from them, or worse, counterfeits! Does anyone have any information to support this, or is Crutchfield yankin' me in order to get a sale?

Wish list: Flowmaster duals, K&N FIPK, and a Belltech 3/4 drop. |
I think this is a general comment by Crutchfield.
There are many shady online dealers but there are also many good ones beside Crutchfield. BTW I can get the 6813 for $60.00 at a local stereo shop. I listened to both and don't think the 3way is much better than the 2way. |
Anyone else confirm/deny Crutchfield's claims about other "online" venders?

54regcab, You found Pioneer 6813s
for $60.00 at a local stereo shop? What's the name of these guys and are they in Columbia,SC?? Also, I'll bet you won't be able exchange them, Crutchfield will take them back up to a year later and pay return shipping. Freezer, you would do yourself a favor by installing a small amplifier. The improvment made by adding new speakers is nill because the factory deck's power is anemic. Get a quality 25Wx4 or 35Wx4 and you will no longer think your $180 is wasted, sure you'll have to shell out 200 or so but you've already been bitten by the factory sucks bug.
