12's ported vs 15's sealed

this is going into my 09 Scion xB (yea, i know its not a Ford, lol)
the subs will be DC Sound Lab Level 3's
k, im gathering input on which you think would be louder
i am not particularly concerned with sound quality b/c i have owned both ported and sealed setups and for my application, they are practically the same

so...
12's in an ideal ported enclosure tuned to ~33hz
(will be either using aeroports or a kerf flared slot port)
or
15's in straight sealed

My thoughts are that the given the drivers recomended enclosure size and power that the 15's would be just a bit louder but the 12's may play a bit lower.

12s ported is my vote

abervintageman4 Apr 14, 2009 10:49 PM

12's ported would hit harder than the 15's sealed

I personally really love the way most 15's sound sealed. Theres just something about it.

Any chance of a ported 15 setup? That could end up being fun....

actually it would be the other way around. the 12's would have the greater SPL potential. the 15's would be able to play WAY lower

C. Whammy Apr 15, 2009 04:03 AM

why do you think that the 15's would play lower?

and yes low, a single 15 ported is a possibility...but keep in mind that output is my goal.,,,

C. Whammy Apr 15, 2009 04:04 AM

and remember that "low" to me refers to rap. so the lowest i would need to go would be for like "put on" or something like that

styxnpicks Apr 15, 2009 05:03 AM

15's are going to have a lower fs than 12's and also sealed boxes don't unload like ported boxes do allowing you to play lower. it depends on what you really want

I stand corrected.... Good Job styxnpicks.

I remember (way back when) the shop I used to get my installs done, did something like this with a single 12 and 15. If I remember correct the 15 sealed in the trunk was about 2db higher in output overall than the 12 but the 12 ported firing forward through the back seat didn't drop off as much past 40hz. But obviously your graph shows otherwise...

C. Whammy Apr 15, 2009 10:48 AM

so in theory, down to 20 hz the 12's would have the advantage, and below that the 15's would have exponentially more output.
well according to this, its 12's all the way

In the usable sub region the 12's win hands down.

15s sealed! Anything below 30Hz will be friggin violent.
