Alright... I've done quite a few decent SQ installs in the past in vehicles with space... i.e. trunks, and rear hatches and my last vehicle was a Tahoe. But this is rediculous! I now own a late model 2004 Screw I'm running into all kinds of setbacks...

I don't want to lift the seat. I'm happy with a single 10", but would rather have a single 12" I need to buy a sub enclosure that is pre-fab, but doesn't stick out. I'm seriously looking at the JL Stealthbox for my truck, but didn't take into account how long wide it is...

I have 2 Soundstream Rubicon amps: a 1002 and a 502. Both are awesome amps in mint condition, and I don't want to part with them. I set out today to design an amp rack (I work at an engineering firm where we use high-power lasers to cut metals and plastics up to 1/2" thick) and realized that my amps fit just perfectly under the rear passenger seat.

So I'm sitting here and I go to the JL Audio website only to notice that the frickin box they have for my truck sticks out over into the passenger side of the seat! So much for all the amp rack design planning!

How are you guys getting these larger systems into this teenie-tiny area?

I have the JL stealethbox and a JL 450/4 (It's big. It's the same size as the JL 1000/1) and a JL 500/1 and both are mounted on the back wall, BEHIND the rear bench. There is a surprising amount of room back there. Just slap the amps on the back wall and enjoy the JL box.

 

I'm concerned however about cooling and air current. I saw that another member of this forum did that very thing, and when I saw it I immediately thought that his amps must be really hot. I think the reason my amps are still in such great shape, and work so well, is that I've always had them in open free air with no coverings to impede airflow... but if you guys have had luck with this setup I might go that route...

Although upon some thought... I am reconsidering the need for a pre-fab box, especially after seeing the probox setup... That would take me about 15 minutes of CAD work to exactly replicate their box, but the idea of the woofer firing up into the seat is beyond me... I would definitely design it to fire down.

Anyway, thanks for the advice... I think I'm gonna try to incorporate the amps under the seat, and if I can't figure out that scenario, I'll slap em to the back wall with some squirrel fans on the sides or something.

 

Well over the last week I picked myself up Pioneers new Shallow mount 12" sub.

And grabbed an amplifier from my local store. Today I decided I was going to build myself a completely custom box to fit the 12" sub. Using Cad a few times and less than half of one sheet of 3/4" MDF particle board, I had myself a box. It is a down fireing box that goes from the driverside backseat to the end of the 2/3 seat. I took out the jack and planted my amp right there on the floor under the passenger side rear seat. I can tell you how well it all works yet because I am waiting to get a wireing diagram for the factory head unit so I can splice in and get the signal for the amp. I hope to have that diagram tomorrow so I can hear this thing.

 

those rubicon are rockin amps. I had a pair of 32s in my Jeep mounted under the rear seat. less that half inch clearance with seat folded down, never had a problem.

 

If you want a sub in the same quality range as your amps, and that has a mounting depth suitable for what you want, check this out. It is VERY high end. Has a mounting depth of 3 1/8". It is rated down to 15hz in the correct enclosure. Actual frequency response testing shows it is flat from above 100hz down to 40hz, so it is probably down only 2 or 3dB at 20hz, which is phenomenal for a 10" sub with this depth. But, it is expensive, and it only handles 200 watts, so if you are wanting someone in Tokyo to hear you, this ain't what you want. If you are looking for a reasonable, well balanced system, then this could fill your needs.

This is what I would do:

1. If you don't want to add a seat lift then this is the best recommendation for you: Build your own box (always!) and use either a Nobelium or Iridium sub...even the 12" has a mounting depth of 5.5". They also need about an half inch clearance for excursion. These are GREAT SQ subs! I would use the seat lift though...it opens you up a lot more options.

2. Put the amps on the back wall. I have 3 for over a year and never had an over heating issue. I got some power back there too. I have a 9.0, DC360.4 and a DC350.2...no issues. Soon, I will have 2 9.0's and a 350.2.

Here's what I've decided to do... Make an amp rack out of black annodized aluminum that fits under the rear passenger seat for both my soundstream amps, since the 502 is considerably smaller than the 1002, I'll have enough room on the top rack to put in a couple distribution blocks for the power and ground wire.

Then I'll purchase the MTX Thunderform, which is shorter than the JL Stealthbox, allowing me to place my amps where I want them. I'll quickly ebay the 4500 sub that comes with the enclosure and replace it with one of the Adire Audio Shiva's that I have. I've done the measurements, and I'm sure this will work well. I realized as soon as I started taking measurements that building a box for this truck was way more effort than I'm willing to put forth at this point... not saying I couldn't, just saying I don't wanna.

As for the rest of the system, i.e. components, I'm torn between CDT and Focal, and so that is what I'm reasearching now.

Here is the entire wiring diagram book for the F150. This is the manual that your dealership has. I scanned the entire book into pdf format and put it up on some webspace over a year ago. It is the 2005 book, but should work just fine with the 04's and 06's. Alot of people could use this book, but it always gets lost. I think maybe a sticky in the electrical forum would be appropriate?
