2ohms and factory head unit
 

I am replacing my factory speakers with a set of Infinity's both in the front and rear. The Infinity's are 2 ohms and was wondering if that will cause issues with the factory head unit.

I have the 2 ohm infinty kappa components. I have been running them off of the stock HU for a few weeks now. THey sound god and I have not had any issues. But, I will be installing an amp soon.

It can be OK for a while, especially if you use low to medium volume levels, but if you overdo it, it could eventually cause problems. It's all in the design of the equipment. Power supply capability of the factory HU is weak to begin with, and asking it to work into a 2 ohm load is pushing it. It's all about heat. Output devices are designed to have certain limits. Asking them to do more than that causes excess heat, which is a death sentence at a point.

I agree with 97f250 It probably isnt a good idea at high volume levels or for extended periods. So, I guess if you are planning on keeping the Stock HU you should just go with a 4ohm speaker.

A 2 ohm load on the factory head unit will be ok granted you dont run at full volume. According to OHMS law, when you cut impedence in half you double the working load. If you turn your head unit up all the way im willing to bet it will kick the unit into thermal protection.

I probably wouldnt do it, but if you already have them installed - just run it until it breaks then add a 2 Ohm stable amp.

Thanks, I don't have it cranked very loud, just wanted better imaging with the componets. I guess if it goes **** up, I can justify a new head unit.

I just had an amp go out because I was running it .5 ohms lower than it was rated for. The amp worked just fine when I kept gain off/low. One evening I decided to see what the system would do. It sounded great, but now the amp goes into protect as soon as it's powered up.

The amp was rated for 400 watts RMS @ 2 ohms. At my speaker terminals I was seeing 1.2 ohms.
