Sub solution for ex-cab owners!!!

I finnaly found it!
I didn't want to raise the seat. I didn't want to shell out the but $$$ for a stealth box. I insisted on a 10" woofer.
Picky? Dang right!

I found a place in Lubbock TX that has a box set. A large box for under the passenger seat and a smaller box for the driver's side.
Box price??? $90!!!!
The boxes won't fit some of the deeper woofers but shorter ones like JL10W1, or the Kicker 10" competition, will fit. I fit a JL10w0 after a little grinding on the inside.

The place is called MGM electronics
Phone number: (806) 798-3343
Address: 5181 69th, Lubbock, TX 79424
Ask for Jamie Lamar. He was very patient with me being so picky and answered all of my questions.

feel free to email me if you have anymore questions at: catdaddy@usaonline.net

WOW that is one heck of price, fits my budget thats for sure! Let me know how it sounds when you get the install finished. I am in the process of building my system too. You can e-mail me at AUFUTBL65@aol.com

Jolly_Green_Giant 02-15-2000 10:26 PM

I'm just about done with the install.
The box is proving to be quite a bear to install. First there are some screws that stick out of the bottom that have to be ground down. If they arn't they'll puncture the cone.
Next the space between the top of the box and the bottom of the seat isn't quite enough. I'm grinding a little off of the cardboard surounding the woofer and I'm going to try to grind some off of the bottom of the seat tomarrow.
It sound's pretty dang good for 1 10" sub.
Won't blur your vision, but it will make the objects in your rear view mirror look less stable than they really are if you know what I mean. https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

Jolly_Green_Giant,

Do you have any pics of this box?
I notice it sounds like a two piece box, but only one woofer, can you describe this set up?

Thanks,

Jolly... Are you certain that the cone or surround of the 10" won't hit the seat bottom when it travels to full excursion? It sounds like a pretty snug fit and if the cone touches, you may lose the voice coil in a puff of smoke!
Another thing that occured to me is the gap being small between woofer and seat may whistle at mid/high volume levels.
I really hope your install works, many of us are awaiting your reports with baited breath!
Best of luck!
Bruce

for you guys interested in a custom made box for you extended cab, i have found a box that will hold 2 - 10" subs. it will slide right under you rear seat, with no lifting or anything, not sure what it would sound like,i think your sub choices would probably be limited ,due to air space...go to www.outlawaudio.net...click browse catalog, click speaker boxes ,scroll down and there you are...

I'm taking pictures of the install.
The two piece box is a long box for the pass. side and a smaller box for the driver's side, one woofer in each box.
I didn't install both boxes because I was worried about there being two diferent air spaces and the woofers hitting differently.
I should finish the install tonight and I should have the pics on my www page by tomarrow.

Bruce:
The cone doesn't hit, I checked. Also those ribs under the seat work perfectly for venting the air, it isn't whistling that I can tell (yet).

I checked out that box, looks good. But I emailed them 2 days ago asking about internal volume but so far have heard nothing. Do you know how much it is?

Hey Wolvrin,

Let us know the internal cubes of that box when they get back to ya,please.

Jolly,

Do you know the internal cubic inchers of the box you installed?

DS https://www.f150online.com/f150board/smile.gif

Jolly_Green_Giant 02-18-2000 08:53 AM

The big box is at least .75 cubic feet because it was just big enough for that JL 10W0.
The smaller box doesn't have near that. Probably closer to .50' cubic feet.

wolvrin704 02-25-2000 10:01 AM

Well I finally got a reply today from Outlawaudio.net about their 10" speaker box. I had to email them again before they replied but this is what they had to say.

"The Ford speaker box is made to fit the 1997-2000 model ex-cabs. The internal volume is .39 cubic feet per side and the mounting depth is 4.5". We have these boxes in stock."

Now if I can find some subs to fit those dimensions I'll be in business. Any ideas guys?

He emailed me back when I asked what subs he recommended. He said he didn't have any but that the Crossfire CF series would fit. I also found on Sound Domain that the DEI subs all are .36 - .4, so there are some choices. However after checking out your install I might go your route. How does the 1 10" sound? I really wanted 2 but if 1 sounds all right then I might do that.

Jolly_Green_Giant 02-25-2000 01:46 PM

The one 10" is really perfect for sound quality with the 200w max. What I mean by that is that anymore cone surface and I would probably overpower the other speakers to give a "bottom heavy" sound. I am a concert musician so I'm really picky about a well rounded sound.
Like I said above "It won't blur your vision but the objects in the rear view arn't so stable anymore".
The JL was also a very good choice. Decent SPL and GREAT SQ.
