1715 and performance settings

for those of you have have a 1715 out there,
it seems there are two different generations out there, ones that have 3 performance settings and ones that are single.

are the old ones in the black/purple with lightning boxes and the newer ones in the yellow boxes?

is there any easy way to tell them apart?

I know mine is an after Sept 03, when I think they made the change. It has a production date decal on the ST of 02/10/04 and came in a yellow box. It has the three settings.
Hope that helps!

My box is yellow/ orange, but I only have the single setting.

If I had waited two more months, I would have been able to get the newer one. Still was worth the money - love the programming!!

That's OK, I plan on switching to the 5-way custom chip soon. I like the idea of "switch-on-the-fly" programming, especially since I put a lot of miles on my truck each day, but also use it for towing my wakeboard boat occasionally.

So if it is a single mode, you must run the high octane then?

Is towing possible then, or you just kick it back to stock while towing?

Thanks all.

Yes and Yes. I have to use high octane and yes I can tow in that mode. The newer unit has both a high octane tow mode and a high octane non-tow, street performance mode.

Hi everyone,

The 3-program version of the 1715 Micro Tuner was released mid-September of 2003, so anyone who purchased one from that point in time on should have gotten the 3-program version.

The *original* 1715 has a single performance program which requires the use of premium gas and is towing compatible. There are *many* of those tuners out there, doing a very nice job for their owners.

There is a sticker on the back of each Micro Tuner indicating it's date of production, and that is the easiest way to tell which unit you have. We have seen both units in either box from time to time, so I wouldn't count on the appearance of the box as a 100% reliable indicator of which unit it is. As long as the production date sticker on the back of the 1715 indicates it was built on or after mid-September 2003, then it's going to be the 3-tune Micro Tuner.

Anyone who is in the market now for a Micro Tuner and who wants the best power and performance is best served by going with the 9100, which is the newest custom tune-capable version of Micro Tuner. In that unit, with our custom tuning we get even higher power and performance gains than the 1715 delivers. Now of course it costs a little bit more to have us do our in-depth custom tunes, but the additional performance (even on a bone-stock vehicle) is well worth it for those who want the absolute highest possible safe & sustainable power and performance gains. Those on a budget will still be very well served with the 1715 unit - the 9100 and our custom tuning is for those willing to spend a little more to get the ultimate in performance tuning for their F-150 (or just about any other 1996-2004 FoMoCo vehicle with the EEC-V PCM).

Just some quick FYI, enjoy your holiday weekend everyone................

Thanks for the info. yes, it is budget time so i picked up a used 1715. just got it in tonight.
My main goal was to correct for the larger tires (procomp 33x12.50 17MTR) I measured them at 32, knocked it down to 31.50 to get an accurate reading on the GPS.
I was also hoping that it would correct the shift points so that it will hold OD when going up small rises on the highway. just did a few passes so may have to play with that later.

one interesting side note - the 1715 is smarter than me. long day at work, answered Yes to Manual Tranny - still worked fine, drove fine.

just for fun, i was going to raise the speedlimiter, only saw the option for Raise or Stock, was only able to hit Yes, not change. is that not an option for the '03 SuperCrew 4.6? or maybe since it's in 89 Octane mode? wanted to do a couple tanks on regular grade to get a baseline.
