4R100 Swap
I don't have a F150 but I'm hoping the experienced on here would be able to help me out with some questions......
My 1999 Expedition 5.4 4x4 234k needs the transmission rebuilt. A friend from church own a reputable transmission shop and told me the trans needs rebuilding. Tons of metal shavings everywhere when the pan was dropped. They quoted $2,800 and I can't see putting that much into the Expedition. I found a low mileage trans from a 1998 5.4 4x2 a few hours from me for a great price. This one has 1 speed sensor and I think mine has 2. The 4x4 on mine doesn't work, so I removed the fuse. The stubby shaft popped out on the front differential.
Would this trans work for my truck? I don't mind not having 4x4. Would I need to replace the rear axle to a 4x2 and get a longer drive shaft? What about the speed sensors? I'd be going from 2 to 1. How would I bypass this issue?
Where do the metal shaving come from? I assume it's all from the planetary gears/teeth?
Or am I better off rebuilding my own trans? I'd do it myself. Never done it but I've done a lot of mechanical work and I'm not afraid to tackle it. It would just be slow going with my bad back.
I'm leaning towards rebuilding it myself. From what I've read, and a thread here helped a lot, it sounds like the 4x2 trans won't work or it will need many modifications to work.
I appreciate any insight I can get on this!
