4R75E on its last legs?

When you crank the engine (5.4 3V) first thing in the morning when everything is cool and shift into Drive, the trans goes into gear promptly, as it should. With the engine at operating temperature, when you shift from Park to Drive, it takes about 5 or 6 seconds for the trans to go into gear. I just had a new trans filter and a UHaul trans pan installed, and had the trans self-flushed and refilled with Motorcraft Mercon V. Problem is still there. Never had this problem on previous Fords. I realize this trans probably won't make it to 250,000 miles, but I'm hoping to get at least a few more years out of it before I have to rebuild. Trans shifts fine. Does it sound like this trans is about to go, or could it be that absent any abuse it will last me a few years? 98K on the clock now. Old trans fluid did not smell burnt. Thanks in advance.

next symptom....when you have to REV motor to engage gear.... Time to overhaul....
the delay may be an EARLY sign. But Mark or Darrin would certainly know MUCH more than I.
Mine gave up at 175k...With some expert upgrade advice I rebuilt it bout 4yr ago

We have a good transmission shop in town. I know that's rare. They rebuilt the trans in my other '06, a 4.6 4X2 for $1500. When the trans goes out in this one, I intend to pay the extra and get a reman unit after doing some more research for a good source. So far, Powertrain Products is looking pretty good.

There's also a guy that frequents these forums that can build you a heck of a transmission that you can count on.

That one isn't one that I'm a good resource for since it didn't come in the full size rear wheel drive vehicles like these trucks

Not till 2009. 2008 and earlier use Mercon V.

Main difference is viscosity, but there are other differences. Should not be mixed and not compatible with each other.
