My son has a 2002 F150 Extended Cab Short Bed 4X2 with a 5.4L motor in it.
He broke his drive shaft this weekend off-roading. He was able to find one locally on CL that his friends brought out to the desert. When we went to swap over the U-joints and yokes, we discovered that the replacement drive shaft took a smaller U-joint than his had. I've come to find out, well at least I think I know, that must have been a V-6 drive shaft.

Now we're trying to figure out if we can use this drive shaft, and use a combination U-joint, or are there other issues. Here's my questions.

Would a V-6 drive shaft be the same length as a 5.4L drive shaft?
Would a 5.4L drive shaft be the same length regardless if it had a 4R70W or the 4R100? Or are there slight differences in length?
If the truck is sitting on the ground at ride height, how much space should there be between the flange on the slip yoke, and the end of the trans snout? With this replacement drive shaft, there is only about 3/8".

 

It might be a 4.6 driveshaft, the 4.6 uses a 8.8" rear, the 5.4 uses a 9.75" rear. I'm pretty sure that the 4R70W and 4R100 driveshafts are different lengths. I don't think there's a difference between a 4.2 and 4.6 driveshaft.

My best suggestion is get it towed to a driveline shop, have them build one for you.

 

Thanks for the response, I'm trying to figure out which trans is in it right now.

Having one made isn't an option for him, he doesn't have the cash to get one made, that seems to run about $600 for an aluminum drive shaft.

 

Look at the door jamb sticker, the TRANS code for a 4R70W is "U", a 4R100 is "E".

You can also look at the transmission pan, the 4R70W is basically rectangular, the 4R100 looks like the state of Utah, it's more "L" shaped.

Check with a junkyard, they have interchange books. You can also search junkyards at car-part.com.

I'm homing someone here has the same truck as my son, and can measure their driveshaft for me.....

It's a 2002 F150 Extended cab 4X2 short bed, with a 5.4L and the 4R70W trans and the 9.75" rear end.

His got destroyed out offroading and we can't get a measurement on the old one.

Either weld to weld, or from center of U-joint to center of U-joint.

Does anyone with an extra cab 5.4 have a couple minutes that could measure their driveshaft for me, or maybe even just measure the distance between the flange on the slip yoke and the end of the trans.

For some reason, we are having a hell of a time finding the right driveshaft, and it doesn't seem like it should be this hard of a driveshaft to find.
