4r70W Torque convertor fluid change
I am not quite sure I understand this. What do I need to do to change the fluid in the torque converter? I think I need to pull an inspection cover and it's drain plug. what about filling it? I can't seem to find what I am looking for, and I have a Haynes manual as well as the Factory FSM

Drop the pan, dump the fluid, clean the pan. Drain the converter with the plug. Reinstall the pan and plug. Add 6 quarts through the dipstick tube then start the engine. With it running, add a quart at a time till the dipstick registers full. With your foot on the brake, run it through all the gear selections for a few minutes. In Park, add till it's full. Drive it for a few minutes and recheck.
Note: If you change the filter, make sure you get the old o-ring out. However, filter change really isn't necessary,

Tip: When you remove plug from torque converter, go have a long lunch/dinner beak, it takes forever to drain. glc has given you great instructions (above), follow them closely. Re-check level again after driving 25+ miles too. I prefer to pour old fluid into gallon bottles so I can put back same amount of what came out. Be SURE to use the correct fluid too, else you will destroy your tranny.

Okay, looks pretty straight forward. I will be using Mercon V. Actually I will be using Amsoil ATF as pictured. I will be changing the filter as well
this should end up being about 14 quarts right?
AMSOIL Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic ATF is recommended for transmissions, hydraulics, power steering systems and other applications that require any of the following specifications:
Ford MERCON*, MERCON* V, ESP-M2C166-H, FNR5, M2C924-A;

I always check my owners manual to be 100% sure on fluids. 14 qts. sounds right. Owners manual will also tell you how much fluid. I always added 1/4-1/2 qt. of Lucus tranny treatment when doing changes...the thick gooey stuff. Some don't recommend it but I have always had good luck with it. You did not state year of car/truck....not needed as long as you are sure what you are putting in....change the filter too. I added a tranny plate cooler (BCM 70264) to all my cars/trucks. I install the cooler after the radiator lines. I live in hot Florida and it extends life of fluid and life of tranny by 2-3 times imho.....well worth the extra $100 or so if you plan to keep your car/truck a long time.
