Question Are fuel injector cleaners worth the $$?

Are the aftermarket fuel injector cleaners in a bottle worth the money? Do they actually work? They range from $1.99 to $6.99 and up. Do you get what you pay for, or are they all a sham like the engine treatments?

Thumbs up

I've had good luck with them. Hey, if they do half of what they advertise then their worth it. I personally think the STP system cleaner (gray bottle) is the best. I run it thru all my vehicles about every 6-7k miles.

BTW, are the kings running yet? Damn I miss AK.

no proof other than good running engines over many miles:

1. 86 saab 9000t, heavily modified, 300,000 miles. put her to rest when she tore the eng. mounts to pieces. spent many seconds/minutes at redline.
2. 91 camaro z281le, highly modified, 150, 000 miles when i sold her. in 3rd gear at redline over many laps at road atlanta and roebling road.
3. 97 f150 xlt, slightly modified, 120,000 miles--still own it--it takes me to far off bass ponds.
4. 01 lightning, 3900 miles--just getting started--what a rush!

i use Regane, VP(expensive), and , every once in a while, Marvel Mystery Oil--no kiddin'

Question

Just dropped in some Chevron Techron yesterday, at 11,500 mi. The instructions say, add to nearly empty tank, and add up to 12 gallons of fuel. Well, I had a half tank, dropped it in, then filled up with an additional 13 gallons. Did I mess up? Will this "diluted" mixture still work properly or should I add another bottle?

I have heard that using them too often will eat away seals and the float on your sending unit. I throw in a bottle of Amsoil P.I. quickshot, every 5,000 miles. Infact i used it yesterday and it cleared up some hesitation my engine had on startup.

I use Amsoil PI just about every other tank.

6oz/10 gallons initial, then 1oz/10 gallons there after. Keep the whole thing running great all the time. I usually add 2 to 3 oz to a full tank of 25 gallons.

Since using PI, I have also went from using Mid-grade, to the regualar, with no pinging or hesitation.

I've always had good results using Techron too. I have given my '89 Taurus a double dose of the stuff every 12-16 months since it was new. I've tried several other premium cleaners as well as some cheap ones with limited success. I'm nearing 150k on the car now...never had an engine or injector problem.

I'd say you need to add another bottle, but I don't know how you would "mix" it up in your already full tank? Take some really "hard" left and right turns maybe?? Or just let this on go, and add two next time.

I've haven't added any cleaner to the F150, but did notice a big difference after the first couple of tanks of Texaco unleaded gas. I bought the truck used, so have no idea what brand of gas was in it or used before. Just seems more "snappy" now. Used their Premium in my '86 Mustang GT for years and never used any other cleaners. The engine/injectors always seemed to perform just fine.

My personal opinion and experience with Techron is that it won't make all that much difference. I use the big bottle and you're supposed to put in 20 gallons of gas. I just did it last week and I just topped off the tank with 23 gallons.

One word of advice. Check your oil. If your cylinders have lots of carbon built up, it will get blown down into the oil and you may want to change the oil once all the fuel is used up. When I used to do this on my old truck, the oil would turn black.

Dont waste your money buying all these products and using them OVER AND OVER. Simply buy B&G 44K and use once a year or twice if you drive a lot. This stuff is the strongest cleaner on the market and it works amazingly well. Costs from $13 - $25 depending on where you get it. All the professionals use this product. For the best cleaning, get a B&G engine decarb done around 50K or so. I could not believe the difference. It supposedly cleans EVERYTHING throughout your entire engine and exhaust system. WOW! Costs from $80 - $140 and takes about a hour.

Good luck!
