2006 FX4 front differential cover / seal leaking - looking for advice

I recently replaced the rear differential cover and seal to stop a leak from the rear differential, now I am looking to do the front differential seal and cover (also leaking).

Does anyone know if it's as straightforward as the rear? Open cover, let drain, replace cover and seal, fill?

Also, does anyone know what the part numbers are for the front differential cover? The rear is the 9.75, the front looks more circular. Is the front the 8.8 like some rear covers? Are the 8.8 rear and the front the same piece?

Truck is obviously 4x4 if that matters...

Thanks!

All front diffs are 8.8.

Item #2, P/N 2L1Z4033CA

No gaskets available from Ford, the factory uses RTV. I do not know if the gasket for a 8.8 rear will fit, parts catalogs only show gaskets for the rear.

Make SURE you can get the fill plug loose before you remove the cover.
I do not know if any aftermarket covers are available.

Thanks boss. Are the front and rear 8.8 covers the same cover? If so, I'm golden.

Nope. In fact, a rear 8.8 cover costs about 1/3 as much as a front 8.8 cover.

Interesting. Those two covers (other than color, and the stickers on the black one) look exactly the same to me. Maybe I'm missing something.

I'm going to try a rear cover first and see how far I get...

Used one on my mustang. No mess and works great.
