I'll be honest, I don't know much about vehicles. But, that being said, I'm planning on buying a travel trailer here soon to live in so that I can stop renting apartments while in college.

I'm looking in the 27-31 foot range so that I can make sure to have a comfortable amount of living space for myself and a friend who may be moving in with me to help offset costs. For a trailer of that size, what size truck should I shoot for?

 

A lot depends upon the weight, but in that size range, you are looking at at least a F250.

A 31' travel trailer can weigh over 10k pounds or 5000 pounds loaded. Really depends on materials and construction. In that range, 3/4 ton makes a lot of sense and really does not cost much more than 1 half ton unless you get a diesel.

Are you sure you want to live in 225sq ft? You'll have to pay for the costs of where you park it, plus the cost of the TT and tow vehicle. Renting may seem like throwing money away, but there are benefits.

 

Honestly, I'm just tired of dealing w/ obnoxious neighbors that I'm stuck with because a stupid piece of paper says I can't leave until after a certain date. The idea of being able to pick my house up and move whenever whoever lives around me gets too annoying is...very appealing lol

 

Like others have said, you will def want a 3/4 ton. And would benefit with a diesel.

 

I have a 27' Jaco and my F150 has no problems at all pulling it. If I were to pull my TT everyday I would want a 3/4 ton though. Half tons are good for occasional towing, but not really designed to handle everyday heavy towing.

 

I have a 97 F-150 5.4 4X4 4:11 gears 33" tires and i pull a 33' keystone outback 5th wheel. 1600# toungue weight 9200#loaded. I run an airbag suspension. Oh and the hot rodder in me had to see how fast I could pull it, lets say i broke into triple digits. Bite me bowtie boys!!! Oh wait you cant catch me.

To the original poster - look for a good used F250 or F350 with a gas V-10. That's the best compromise.

 

That is one of the major reasons I want to move into a travel trailer.

 

Oh, yeah, it would only be used for occasional towing, not daily. From talking with some of my classmates who also live in trailers, they simply aren't having the neighbor probs I am, so I wouldn't be very likely to move it often until this summer when I'll need to drive it up to Arkansas for my internship. But even then, it would only be once there and once back.

 

An F150 could do it, a 250 can just do it better and with less strain on the engine and trans

 

Thanks =) I'll be sure to keep an eye out for a good deal on one of those two then, but after I find my trailer so that I'm sure of the towing capacity I'll need. I'm completely sure that a 350 would be too *much* truck, though lol I appreciate all your comments, though, guys! =D

 

You can never have "too much truck" for towing. IMO
