New HID Fog/Headlights
New HID Fog/Headlights
Alright, so I've been reading up on headlights for the past 8 or so hours trying to decide what to go with since my passenger bright filament went out. I was going to just get a set of Philips X-treme Power +80%, but am thinking about going with DDM HID's instead. A friend has them in his Lexus and I really like them.
I would go with the Apexcone Raptor 55w 5000k 9007 Hi/Low Kit w/ the harness for the headlights. If i go with that do i need the error code eliminator? Also, I know you can get harness's that hardwire the lights directly to the battery to bypass the (thin) factory wiring which will increase power to the lights. Is that what the harness that comes with the kit will do or should i order one of those from somewhere like suvlights.com or a similar site?
As for fogs, I'm a little confused as to what kit i need. I know the factory halogens are 9145's, but what would i need from DDM, if it is even possible to get them for my fog's?
PS: MGD, I will be sure and properly aim them and simulate myself in the other persons car to be sure they aren't blinding.
Edit: Or maybe I should be asking if it's worth going with a HID kit if I'm not going to switch to projectors? I just figured since the DDM kit's are halfway decent and don't cost much more than the X-treme Powers, that i might as well.

I'm not sure on what bulb sizes you need, but I have DDM HIDs in my heads and fogs. My headlights are hi/lo and it came with a harness to wire it to the battery. My fog lights didn't come with a harness, but I will probably order one soon.
Now, the "proper" way to do HIDs is with true projection headlight, which normally means a retrofit for us. However, if you are looking for some bright bulbs, but aren't too worried about "glare" or whatever else people complain about....
....DDM should be fine. I'm satisfied with my setup.

Alright, well maybe I'll just order the head's for now and order fog's when i figure out what exactly i need. Did you go with the 35w or 55w kit?
I am also wondering if i will have to worry about wires and/or lens's melting?

I'm very flattered, bud! However, what could possibly have motivated you to include this, I have absolutely no clue

Good luck sir!

Well I just placed the order for 55w 5000k 9007 Hi/Lo's and 35w 4500k H10's for the fog lights.
I also ordered EGR In-Channel Window Visors earlier today so hopefully everything shows up before the weekend.
...I also get my front bumper fixed and new rear bumper cap put on next thursday. If all goes well, this week could be a real good one
I assume I won't need the error code eliminators so I didn't order those. Now i just need to figure out how to disable the headlight flash when locking/unlocking the doors.

Yes i do, and i can't remember if the lights still flash when locking/unlocking if i have the autolamp switch turned off. I need to go down to the parking garage and throw my new tags on my license plates anyway, so I'll check.
Edit: I checked, they do not come on with the switch set to "O" (Off). I will just have to turn them on manually whenever i need them to reduce wear on the ballasts and bulbs.

Can anyone confirm if this will work on my truck to allow the fog's to be on with Hi/Lo beam in all switch positions?
I did the mod to my truck some time ago, and it's very simple, a 5-10 minute mod if you're confident in what you're doing. The easiest way to do that is to make a splice or bridge between two of the wires on your headlight switch harness. Just make a splice between a solid yellow wire and a solid brown wire. If I recall correctly the yellow is the hot lead to the parking lamp relay and the brown is the lead to the fog light relay. So you're just using the parking lights to turn on the fog lights.
This pic is of my truck and how I did it. The red splices are the fog light mod, you can see they are connected to the solid brown(left) and another splice on a solid yellow(right). I used a very short piece of solid blue wire to connect them together(below the splices).

AFAIK you also need to mod the switch mechanicals as detailed above.
BTW - those splice connectors are death, lol

I have looked at that thread MGD, but I am not a huge fan of pulling the switch apart and hacking away at it. Do you think there would be an easy way to just wire a separate switch to control them? That way i could just have them on at demand.
Edit: I have this random switch right here that does not seem to be wired to anything, maybe i could wire it with that since its already mounted there?

Well i started digging around a little and found that there is already a gray wire spiliced into the brown wire. I have no idea what it does. I pulled the tape off and unhooked it and everything seemed to work normally without it spliced in. I can't tell where it leads to either without pulling the dash apart.

...and i still can't figure out this button, The wires seem to be hooked to something, but I will have to pull the dash apart to figure that out too. Tried unplugging and pushing the button with no results their either. I think pulling the dash apart will be added to the list of things to do this weekend.

Alright, for future reference for any of you guys who want to enable the fog lights on in every position(excluding the "O" off position) with Hi and Lo beams, splicing the yellow and brown wire will do exactly that. Doing that will remove the tedious step of pulling apart the switch and filing the ramp. The only reason i could see anyone wanting to go that route is if they wanted the ability to have the fogs on or off, if you want them on at all times then this is the fast and easy way to do it.
