K&N Cold Air Intake System

ok i just got a K&N cold air intake system put on my truck... iv been told since if had it from this guy that they are horrible and complete junk because they let dirt in and will destroy the engine. He said if i dont clean and Oil it every 5 days that this will happen to me...

Is this true and what all do you guys have to say about the filter and what past experience with it do you have with one or what ever else i may need to know about it...?

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that not true.
If oiled properly from the start the air filter shouldn't let dirt into your intake. Yes, you should clean your filter and re-oil normally, but not every 5 days. Maybe every few months or so depending on your driving conditions.

I currently have the 57 series K & N CAI and I haven't had any issues with dirt DESTROYING my engine, lol. Just make sure you keep it oiled properly, but not over oiled.

its very simple the more air it lets in the more dirt it lets in.

Eh, not quite. That would be true only if the filter surface area is the same.

I am not defending the K&N (AFE, Sphincter, etc.) marketing machines (I think they're a complete waste on a 4.6 and 5.4 NA engine).

I've had one on my 4.6 since before I bought it, and I oil/clean it twice a year (oops! Need to do it again this weekend) and I have never had any issues with it. Seems to be cleaner on the inside then any other filter I've ever had.

had K&N drop-ins on my 97 ranger, and my 04 f150 heritage, no problems at all with anything. bought a 77 series intake for my 04 heritage, clean it once or twice a year, sold my heritage got my 08 f150, used the same intake(needed some rigging to make it work) and also clean it twice a year. i have a tube running from my front bumper gap to my filter so it gets dirty quicker so now twice a year is definite. basically once it starts looking kinda dirty(should be about 4-6 months(maybe 5weeks if you live on a dirt road). treat it like you would a paper one, if it looks like it needs replaced, then clean it and re-oil it. also cover the intkae tube while cleaning it so nothing gets in there. some people buy another filter so when one needs cleaned, they just replace it and clean the dirty one later and store it somewhere it wont get dusty. best thing to do is put it in the plastic that it came it after you re-oil it. but dirt wont get in unless you leave a gap, not oil enough or let the filter get really dirty. JUST DONT OVER OIL IT! EXCESS CAN GET SUCKED THRU AND COVER YOUR MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR WHICH CAN MESS IT UP! honestly i have oiled the crap out of mine before with no problems but i no longer have that truck either. right now i am debating on getting an amzoil dry filter when mine needs cleaned to see if i like it better. cleaning it will not take as long but, right now mine whistles and it sounds cool. if the amzoil takes that away, i will put the K&N back on.

I disagree.
I noticed a big difference in my truck after I installed my K & N intake. I have the 5.4.

Not a waste. Just by listening to the intake when stomping the gas you know it's making a difference.

Does the ear dyno supplement or replace the butt dyno?

Wonder what body part is next?

Never mind - don't answer that...

Do you realize that the noise is because you have eliminated the silencer built into the stock intake?

#1 thing you need to do is figure out if your superduty is a flareside or a fleetside

#2 the K&N system is fine in the winter, and at highway speeds but once you start trying to tow at lower speeds your motor is going to hate you while it's sucking in all that engene heat

probably because your wallet was lighter which allowed your truck to accellerate faster BUT without a track time slip to prove your gains, I'll continue to think your SOTP meter needs to be calibrated...

I understand what you guys are saying, but I noticed a power difference in mine as well. It does "seem" quicker. I dont have a track slip, but it does accelerate better, I have the same intake on a 5.4.

1-2 HP @ WOT on a 6,000+ truck? Good luck feeling that.

As TJ suggests, you WILL feel the power reduction when the IAT's go through the roof and the PCM aggressively pulls out timing.

Remember - the Placebo effect is a powerful thing. As is slick marketing.

Remember as well that the stock intake flows what the engine already needs and then some ...

Unfortunately, Sound is not power. It's only noise. Same reason a Fartmaster is a butt-plug.

Shotgunz nailed it - these are simply an engine-dress-me-up item. CRC loves 'em though - lets them sell a ton of MAF cleaner

Nothing wrong with a little bling - just keep some semblance of reality in play...
