Question about buying used XCal 2 tuned by Troyer

Someone sold their 2004 F-150 and bought a Superduty. He no longer needs his Troyer Tuned XCal 2 and wants to sell it. He had the same PCM code on his truck that I have on my 2004 F-150. No other mods on either truck.
Will that XCal 2 work on my truck? My assumption is yes since we both have the same PCM code, same engine, same towing package. But you know what they say when you "assume".

Thank you.

Hi.

First - the unit will be VIN locked to his truck, even if you return it to stock.
This can probably be handled via s/w and email updates.

Second - same PCM code does not mean it has the same strategy. The X2 can pull the strategy code - not sure if you can use the unit to read the strategy on more than one vehicle if it's already locked to one.

Third - does you friend know he can use the X2 on the Superduty, if he gets revised tuning?

Hope this helps ...

Cheers
Grog

It's not a friend of mine, I saw it on eBay although he is probably close enough that I could drive to him and try it out if I bid and win the auction. I won't bid unless I know it will work on my Lariat without costing additional dollars.

I said he bought a Superduty but after re-reading his auction he "moved up to a F-250 Diesel".

I've been wanting to get a Troyer tuned XCal2 and after seeing his auction I thought maybe I could save some dollars and he could recoup some of his.

I'm thinking you would be OK buying the used unit. The code is the code. And I think when you return to stock it is no longer VIN locked. Call Troyer to see what they have to say though.

It may cost you the same after you have it tuned for your truck ... your best bet is give Troyer a call ... cheaper is not always better

What acadianabob said is correct. I had an Xcal1 onn my 05 stang and sold on ebay to a guy who had the same ECU code. It worked perfectly. Just be sure the origional vehicle is returned to stock before you buy. If he sold that truck already and it isnt you would have to buy new tunes. The unit can be unlocked in SCT live load. (only do that if it is still locked)

Hang on there a second - this is *CUSTOM* tuning, not "generic take to to any other 2004 with the same code kinda tuning."

And especially in 2004 F-150's, a very high percentage of them get reflashed to a different code without any documentation of any kind to the owner. It happens before they even take retail delivery, it can happen during a service visit, etc. So if you buy a used unit, it may or may not work - it has to *exactly* match the strategy on the next vehicle, and even if it does, it will still have to be unlocked as well, which means that software is required to do that.

Last - You have no idea what tuning is inside that unit - it doesn't matter even if the strategy does turn out to be the same (which you have no way of knowing until you plug it in and try to use it - that is, after it's been unlocked), the actual tuning may still be completely inappropriate for that vehicle - remember, XCal's are *CUSTOM TUNED* units for each individual vehicle - they are NOT like a standard 1715 Micro Tuner where you can take it to vehicle after vehicle and the tuning is the same on all of them, etc. And if we need to re-do those tunes, by the time you buy the unit and then have to pay us for new tuning, your outlay would be more than if you just bought it new from us - to say nothing of the fact that when buying used you get no warranty, no tech support, etc., you are on your own for that - those benefits go only to the *original* owner.

These are some of the things you need to be aware of, as it's easy to come out on the losing end - we do NOT recommend buying used XCal's expecting them to just be a plug-in and go type of deal, as they rarely are in the F-150 these aren't Mustangs that only have a couple of configurations and codes - these F-150's have *dozens* of configurations and *hundreds* of different strategies each and every model year alone.

Now if someone finds s deal on a used "standard" tuner and they are OK with getting lesser results, than that is fine - for example, the appropriate unit would be the 1714, for example, for a 2004 F-150 - but we simply do not recommend buying a used custom-tuned XCal 2 thinking you are going to save money and that the tuning is going to be correct for your truck, even if you get lucky and the actual strategy does turn out to match.

So make sure to keep all of these factors in mind before making you final decision, and best of luck whatever you decide!

Thanks for the reply Mike.
After reading MGDFans reply I decided to hold off and your reply confirms his reply.
I'll be back in touch when I get ready to buy a tuned XCal 2 from you.

One question I have about your tuned XCal 2.
Do I have to take it to a dyno to finish the tuning or do you have tunes that do not require that trip?

I'm not really up to date on that side of owning a vehicle.
I live outside of Atlanta, GA so I am sure there is probably a shop with a dyno around the Atlanta area if I need to pay them a visit after installing your tune.

Thanks Mike (and MGDFan).

Tom

Hi Tom,

That is really a matter of what kinds of modifications you have on your vehicle, so the best thing to do is to give us a call to go over all of that in proper detail, so that I can give you the most accurate answer - in other words, it's not a cut & dried situation, it can vary depending on the exact vehicle, model year, which engine and it's mods. Feel free to give us a call at our number listed below on this if you like!
