New here and stumped. I purchased this truck with what sounded like a rod knock. Got it home and changed out the rod bearings, there was wear but nothing that I would have expected for rod knock and no metal in pan. Still had the noise after I finished. Checked oil level and it was good, added some Lucas to see if that would help. Noise starts within a couple seconds of start up, it goes up and down with rpm, doesn't change in gear or not. Pulled plug wires and noise doesn't change, when trying to listen to the noise it sounds like it is all over, can't pin point it. Pulled the trans back today to check the Flexplate and don't see any cracks, bolts were tight.

I know this was long winded, but any help or ideas would be great.

I'm wondering if the crankshaft itself is out of alignment/misbalanced.

Any idea how that would happen? I have the transmission pulled back right now, is there anything I should look at. I noticed the Flexplate says aod on it, is it possible the wrong Flexplate was installed at some point? I'm going to pull the torque converter and push the tranny back so I can start it and figure out if it is in the motor.

Sounds like valve train noise to me.

You mean as in loose or broken rockers?

Pulled the torque converter out, and started the truck. With the converter out the noise is so much quieter.

I would remove the valve covers and inpect the valve train. You may also have a cam with worn out lobes. Worn out cam lobes are very common on Chevys and not so much on Fords.

Ok pulled the valve covers and everything looks ok. However I did find the egr tube with a break in the flex pipe. I don't know if that would make the noise I've got, but I'm sure it would have made noise.
