Purchasing a used truck
 

For financial reasons I want to buy an older truck, and the f-150 makes the top of the list. My pap had a '92 and I loved riding in it, you could say there's sentimental value. Also, sellers ask a lot less for Fords than the Chevys and Dodges.

Anyway, I don't want to buy a truck which I'll have to put a ton of money in with constant repairs. I'm wondering what type should I target, (year, engine, ect.), and what are some common problems I should watch to avoid when looking at a specific truck.

From strictly a reliability standpoint, look for a 9th generation (1992-1996) with a 4.9 (300) inline 6 and 5 speed manual transmission. Those engines are slower than snot but they run forever.

Just look for the lowest miles, cleanest truck that will fit your budget. Don't be in a hurry.

So I found an straight 6 manual year '89. I kind of want it. But, could you explain what changed from '89 to '92?

Nothing wrong with an 89. I was just pointing you to the latest generation of that body style. If that 89 looks good, drives good, and is priced right, grab it.
