1993 F150 5.0l 302 Engine swap

Hey all,

I have a 1993 F150 5.0l 2wd that has a bad bearing. I am going to replace it but wanted to know what a simple upgrade would be? Does anyone have any suggestions?

What do you want to get out of an upgrade? Power, efficiency?

The 302 is a great engine for engines of that era. Good power/efficiency tradeoff and reliable. Parts are easy to find, and easy to work on. Maybe invest in a big-bore and new camshaft if you're looking to make the truck more racey- but say goodbye to double digit mpgs. If you haven't already done it - give'r a tuneup.

If I were going to invest the headache and money in putting something different in, I would pull a Diesel engine from a 250/350. But at that point, you're probably better off buying a different truck.

Seems to me that a 5.8/351 wouldn't be a complicated swap.

i would like to put in a motor without needing to change a whole lot, more so, would it be just as easy to swap a 5.8 or stick with the 302 direct replacement....

So from the looks of it I could by a used 93 351 and a computer and use the same wiring harness?

Computer could be an issue - if you have a E4OD transmission it should work, but not if you have a AOD or 4R70W/AODE. The only transmission that a 351 had was a E4OD, a 302 could be any of those.

You'd be as far ahead to just put a fresh 302 in. By the time you put out the money to put in a 351 or mess with a built up 302, you could be dropping a rebuilt 0 mile 302 in there.
No headaches, no messing around with this matches/doesn't match that. Just new motor reliability and performance.
Depends how deep your pockets are.
