Owner's manual Towing capacity confusion 1996 F150

I have a 1996 F150 super Cab, 4x2, automatic transmission, 5.0L engine.
Engine Code N = 5.0L Engine
Axle Code from door sticker = 17 = 3.31 Ratio

I go to the trailer towing table on the page for 4x2 Automatic Transmission in the section Supercab F-150.

The chart does not show any line with the combination of the 5.0L engine and the 3.31 axle. It shows the 4.9L with the 3.31 Axle (GCWR 9500 lbs), and it shows the 5.0L with the 3.55 axle (GCWR11,500 lbs).

Any idea why it doesn't show my actual configuration? Not sure which weight limit to go by.

Thanks
Doug

4.9L is your 5.0L

4.9 is the actual displacement
5.0 is the marketing speak

Many (including myself) though Ford always had a 5.0l back in the day.

A few pages before the towing capacity charts start, the manual shows that the 4.9L is an engine code "Y" which is the 6 cylinder 300.

With that combination I wouldn't tow more than 5000#.

Thanks though...

I guess the safest would be to default to the lower of the two numbers, but I just can't see why they would not show all of the engine/axle combinations.

Thanks

You are going to find that you will exceed the truck's GVWR before you reach the max tow weight anyway - which is why I recommended a low figure. Also, the 302 isn't that torquey an engine to tow heavy and the 3.31's are going to make it strain off the line.

The lower of the two will be the safest. That generation F150 truck didn't have a high tow capacity to begin with.
