m5od-r2 to 4 speed swap looking for answers

Hi,i got a 95 f150 with the 4.9 and the mazda 5 speed od tranny married to a borg warner 1356 tcase. Lookin to swap to a 4sp granny low tranny mainly because i have 35in tires and it seems like the gearing is too high. Want that granny gear for pulling trees and stufflike that. Not too comcerned about highway driving but i need to be able to go 60. I would like to keep as many parts as possible without too many expensive modifications. Suggestions for a tranny? Would it fit right? Would i need new driveshafts or a different clutch? Convert to mechanical or modify the hydro clutch? Any opinions are helpful.

I'm not sure of the differences between the two but you have the option of looking for an NP435 or a BW T18 for a four-speed swap. The best suggestion I can make would be to search this forum and other F-150 messageboards aimed at the older F-series trucks for the M5OD swap. I would imagine that most of them will be swapping to the M5OD rather than from it, but all the instructions and parts lists will be the same for you, only backwards.

Best case scenario is you track down someone that has the same configuration truck as you that wants the M5OD and swap between you.

It's not going to be a bolt in. The M5OD has an integral bellhousing and uses a hydraulic clutch. The NP435 and T-18 both use separable bellhousings and are normally set up for a clutch linkage. You could possibly adapt the replacement bellhousing to to re-use Ford's idiotic annular slave cylinder but why on earth would you want to? What you would need to do is to adapt the shift fork on the replacement housing to use an external slave cylinder. There are some '80s trucks that could serve as donors but I'm not certain of the exact years.

Or you could bolt in a ZF and call it done.

Yeah the zf5 is a little more expensive but may be worth it. Id do the external slave but its a project. Anyone know if it would match up to my t-case. Yeah almost got a np435 with the tcase but the guy sold it the day i was comin to look at it

Well, the T18 was a rare option up to '93, so yes if you find all the bits and pieces it'll bolt in. Ironically the only one I've seen was an Eddie Bauer truck.

I'd look for the small block T18 bell housing, and a T19 tranny from a diesel truck as it had a synco first gear. Wait, no I'd look for a ZF5.

I just did the M5OD swap to a ZF 5 speed last month in my 93 F-150 4x4 4.9 very easy swap, but just to let you know it has a much lower 1st gear than the M5OD, but it is still not a compound lower in other words "No Stump Puller" 100 times better than the M5OD, I'm very happy with mine the only mod was rounding the cross member trans support bolts, I posted pictures on photobucket I'll try to put up the link...http://s1282.beta.photobucket.com/us...awler/library/

one more thing I forgot to mention when locating a ZF "Make Sure" you get one from a 4X4 cause tail section on trans is different on 4x2 and 4x4 also you need one with the same bell housing as your 4.9 they are different for different size motors and diesel and gas models...good luckhttp://s1282.beta.photobucket.com/user/roundrockcrawler/library/

Hi i am new on the ford world i got an old 88 ford f150 with the t18 tranny on it and i can't figured out whats the problem its hard to go into gear and sometimes it wont go into any gear when the engine is running. I took the tranny out check the clutch looks ok, replace the slave cylinder, change the oil on the tranny and still the same problem. I've been driving the truck to work and i have to put it in gear before i start the engine in order to get the gear in. Can someone help me to find out what the problem could be please?? Thanks

How a sticky pilot bearing will not let the tranny to go in to any gear? And what if i decide to swap the tranny wich tranny will fit on my 5.0 with no mods?
