1994 Ford F-150 V8 Hard Shifting

Hello All,

I recently purchased a 1994 Ford F150 V8 with 147,xxx on it. After driving it around town for about 15 minutes they check engine light came on, and it started shifting hard around 40mph. I had the codes pulled and it said insufficient egr flow detected, and Vehicle Speed Sensor Fault. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or idea's on a fix. Bought a VSS sensor as it was $15 and am going to dink around trying to replace that but not really sure where it is located. As far as figuring out the EGR flow any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

A bad VSS certainly can cause issues with how the tranny shifts. Insufficient EGR flow should only cause a slight loss in gas mileage. This can be caused by a bad EGR valve, bad DPFE, or clogged passages.

The posted pic above is for earlier model Fords and that is the
"Transfer Case", not the Tranny.
The problem could be the connection or wires and not the sensor. The speed sensor VSS is located on the top of the rear axle housing on the 1992 and newer Ford trucks. It is a small bolt and a bracket that hold it in place. To replace it, it just takes removing the electrical connector with the two wires. Do this BEFORE removal of the hold down bolt, put the new sensor in the hole followed by the retaining bracket and bolt, and finish by connecting the electrical connector! Make sure the connection is good.

The tranny needs that VSS for proper shifting. Is your speedo working correctly?

I thought something was wrong with that pic. I went under the truck today and saw nothing even close to that haha. No worries. I will take a pic tomorrow of the rear axle housing and hopefully someone can point it out to me as nothing seems to look like the part I was given by oreilly auto. Speedo is working find from what I can tell.
