Need some help please

Yall, I have always liked the old body style F150’s and am looking at a particular 96 xlt 4wd Auto. I am no mechanic by any means and would like some help if possible.

This truck has a 6in lift with 33’s on it and has had a Jasper transmission put in it (apparently the guy he bought it from didn’t disclose the transmission problems) . The truck has approx 170 miles on it with the new transmission at 1500. The transmission has a 10yr warranty. I guess he bought an extended from Jasper. He also says the transfer case has been replaced.

It has the 5.0 302 and the rear was re-geared at 3.10 and the auto hubs were replaced with manual. Has a tow hitch and tool box. The pictures look good/interior is good shape. I can send a pic if needed. The truck is two hours from me. He’s asking 5500 which is way too much..IMO. We may be able to come to an agreement.

Is there anything I need to “pay attn” to?

Are those Jaspers good?

Can it pull a trailer/tractor and bushhog?

Why was it re-geared?
Is there a way to get a VIN history report on a 96 vehicle?

I just want it to go hunting/work around the house/haul stuff and occasionally drive to work/tailgate with it @ football games. I currently drive a Tacoma and the bed is way small and I can’t pull a tractor with it.
Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks yall!

First 33's would fit stuffed at stock height, so with a six inch lift, you need 35's or 37's to not look silly.

Second, I hope you ment 4.10's for the gears as 3.10s would suck with 235-75R15's for pullin.

A 302 is not a very good engine for towing to begin with, and if the gears are that low (numerically) it will be almost painful to get it rolling. The 33 inch tires make it even worse. Better make sure the tranny warranty is transferable, you will be cooking it trying to tow with it.

Towing with a 302

So, an F150 with the 302 will not pull a say a Kubota L4400--link below (3300 pounds) trailer and bushhog? Im guessing the toal weight would be around 5000 pounds. I dont own these but I ocassionally (once a year) rent to do work at the house. They are considerd midsize/compact tractors.

Well, that sucks if thats the case. Really had my eyes on this style of truck

I wouldn't try it unless it had 4.10's or numerically higher, unless it's going to be for short distances - like to and from a local rental yard. Even then, it may be worth it to rent a truck from Home Depot for an hour.

Never seen 3.10's in a F-150 - you may want to check on this again. I've seen 3.08's and 4.10's.

The lower the gear number, the "harder" the motor has to work to get the mass movin'. You could slap 5.30 gears in there to pull a powerstroke backwords, but then the top end would only be 50mph in overdrive, so you are looking for a balance of gear, tire size, and horsepower together for what you want to do.
