Timing issue 96 F150 4.6l Triton

Trying to help a buddy out on his truck and the timing is way off. He recently had to replace the motor and it was running rough and now wont run at all. Its my understanding that you cant time these motors like the older ones and the timing is controlled by the computer. I'm not having luck identifying which computer controls the timing and where it is located. Id appreciate any help. Thanks!

The Triton motors wern't installed until model year '97, so yer in the wrong section. You are correct however the ECU fires off the two coil packs, and is not adjustable. Why do you think it is off?

Thanks for the reply Adrianspeeder. The motor says triton right on it and the truck is 3/96.
When you crank the motor it stumble and stammers and backfire through the throttlebody and dies. Good fuel pressure, good injectors, new coil packs. To hear it, it absolutely sounds like a timing issue.

that's one of the first 97s. Ford will bring out the new body style in march instead august every time they change body styles. Also another way to tell if you have an early 97 is the factory tailpiple was in front of the passenger tire.

Is there a way to test the module that fires the coil pack?

I seriously doubt it has anything to do with the timing unless the chains themselves were not installed correctly. It sounds to me as though a crank or camshaft sensor may have failed. Have you checked the compression yet to see if there are any issues?

I don't think it's the hard timing. I think it is the PCM that controls the spark and fuel timing. I have spark and fuel just don't think it's doing it in the right time. I have spark so crank sensor is working. Checked cam sensor and seems to be working. But the computer takes the signal from the crank and the cam and figures what it should be doing but if it's messed up it will give incorrect orders of when to inject and how much.

Are you sure you have the wires on correctly? If the PCM is not working then it's dead and would need to be replaced and programmed.

No, that was a '99 change.

No worries. This section is focused on the old body style trucks with the good ole pushrod motors. PM a moderator to have it moved to the newer section instead of making a new thread.

Wrong, 97 (only) pipe exited in front of the right rear wheel, 98 & later behind the right rear wheel.

Weird, the one model year '98 I've ever touched had the forward exiting pipe.

Btw what is the condition of the plugs and wires? I agree with checking the proper plug wire routing. Good luck.
