MY 1996 f150 with the 4.9 straight 6 is having trouble starting lately (it's a 5 speed manual). Usually it will start right up but if I go to the store for instance and come back out it takes like 4 -6 tries to get it started. It will fire initially but the rpm's won't go over 1K even when giving it gas and it stalls out. It's almost like it bogs down as if it's clogged or something.

Any ideas? Replace the fuel filter perhaps?

I'd start with a fuel filter.

 

I'd have the fuel pressure checked.
