1995 f 150 gas pump?

I got a 1995 f 150 last week. it only has 30,000 miles on it and i got a good deal. anyhow. it has the straight 6 in it, and all the basic options. It has the dual gas tank in it also. This is where the problem comes in.

the front tanks is 19 gallons, and the back is 18.2. I filled the front tank to run off of, and put 10 gallons of gas in the back tank as a reserve. Driving down the road today, i felt the truck start to sputter out, as the front tank ran out of gas. I promptly switched it to the rear tank, and it picked back up again. i drove a few more miles and stopped at a friends house to get somthing. As i got in the car to leave his driveway, i started my truck, and put it in reverse and backed up. As i shifted to drive, the truck died, and wouldn't restart, and acted like the engine wasn't getting any gas.

as an instinct, i had my friend turn the key while i stood back by the rear fuel tank, and i heard the buzz of the fuel pump, which means it was on. The only thing i could figure is that somehow, somthing wasnt drawing gas to the engine. I walked to the gas station and bought 2 gallons and walked back and put them in the front tank and switched the truck back to the front tank, and it started right up.

What could be wrong with the back tank, if i can hear the fuel pump start up with i turn the key?

There's a strainer 'sock" on the suction line of the pump in the tank. They normally do not present a problem but if there is an accumulation of rust or other crud in your tank it could clog when the pump is running

You have to pull the pump
That means either dropping the tank or lifting the bed to get at it.
