1983 F150 not pumping gas

Hi all. I'm a newb on this site. Hoping you all can help me out. I have a 1983 with a 351. It wasn't pulling gas through the tanks, so I hooked it directly into a gas can and still nothing. So, I replace the fuel pump...still no gas. Something I'm missing?

What did you hook to a gas can?

Has the fuel pump been replaced? You worded that a little confusing.

Have you checked for power to the fuel pump?

Is the filter clogged shut?

Did you check the inertia switch, fuses, and relays?

Anything you answered no to, check.

Welcome to the site!

Manuel pump right? you ran a hose somewhere on the feed side of the pump? You changed the fuel filter right? this is a carburated truck?

I am not getting fuel through the fuel pump either way. I replaced the fuel pump and still the same thing.
Thanks for the quick replies.

You might have to take the timing cover off and check that the camshaft is hitting the fuel pump lever.

Don't mess with checking the camshaft/lever engagement till you've checked everything else.

Clean/replace the inline fuel filter

Is there a filter sock on the fuel pickup? If so clean/replace it.

Check for collapsed hoses. Pull the hose off the fuel pump discharge and crank the engine. Does the pump pour fuel? If it does, then replace the discharge hose. If it doesn't replace the suction hose. Fuel hose is cheap enough and the truck old enough, you probably should just go ahead and replace both hoses anyway.

Pulled the discharge line from fuel pump and still nothing. BUT.....I am running the intake side of the pump directly into a gas can. NOT THE GAS TANK.

Thanks all

Then you have a bad or wrong fuel pump. Pull the pump and bench check it - does it pump fuel when you operate the lever?

While you are at it pull your dipstick and smell it. Sometimes when the diaphram goes bad on the old mechanical pumps they can leak fuel into the oil. If it smells like gas change the oil and filter PRONTO!
