Bw 1356

Is there anything that can be done for the ungodly amount of noise the transfer case in these trucks makes? I'm gunna start looking for a new trans and transfer case soon to swap in and then if that's not better I'm gunna rebuild the original trans and tcase, just one of these things I haven't done yet and kinda want to.
So transfer case.. why is it so frickin loud.

Its a ford, everything on these trucks is loud!!

But what kind of noise are you talking about?
Clicking, grinding, etc?
Is it only loud while in 4hi? Or just all the time?

In 2 hi above like 1500 rpm is just whines like crazy. I never really noticed it until I got a quiet exhaust. I'm sure some of it comes from my trans too, the syncros in it sound like a couple of turtles fighting in a tin can.

Ill second that, Once I got my exhaust fixed and the hangers welded back on I noticed a little more noise. But I also have a decently loud exhaust...plus the 4.9L is one of the loudest engines I know of...

It honestly could be the motor making a lot of the noise too, I'm just not used to it after straight pipe for a year to duals.
I will try to make a video this weekend and see what ya'll think.

sounds like first gear in bw-t18

I've not had a 1356 fail yet personally. Their only design flaw is a slightly failure prone oil pump, but that is an easy fix. These came even behind the powerstroke, so you ain't gonna tear it up.

I didn't think I was gunna tear it up it just seems really loud.
But hey the rock crusher trans was bullet proof and loud because of that so maybe I shouldn't complain here.

losthillbilly73 09-01-2011 08:06 AM

thats because the rock crushers had strait cut gears not helical

when i swapped engine/trans, i kept my original 1356, but i have the 1356 that is the mate to my zf 5speed, from a f250hd. the linkage, length, and basic shape are the same, but the f250 case has huge ribs on the back, alot heavier, and has a fixed rear yoke. i plan to have a new rear driveshaft made for the fixed yoke and install the 250 case, is it worth doing this? i woulda done it when i did the motor/trans, but kept the original slip yoke case to save time and cash.

Sure you don't have a 1345 Blue?

I know, I was just sayin. It's bullet proof due to the straight cut gears and hence the noise.

BLUE BLOODED 09-02-2011 02:18 AM

no,im pretty sure its not 1345, arent those full-time? both these are definately part timers. factory lockout hubs and the same shift linkage/patern. ive spun the rear yoke in 2hi and input shaft turned, but not the front. turned the front and rear or input didnt move. the one im using now holds 2 quart of fluid, the other one holds 6 or so. i always thought there was only 2 1356s, manual and touch-drive, thats why im asking cause i didnt know this bigger case existed. im happy to hear you guys praising the chain drive case for its stamina.

russo2 09-02-2011 10:47 AM

That is the 1345, it's part time and it holds 6 Pints not [B]quarts[B]

BLUE BLOODED 09-02-2011 01:12 PM

yes, it is pints, not quarts.my haynes manual said 1345 is full-time, but that doent mean they didnt make a mistake. so, any difference between the 2? they are the same length, same input spline(i think all fords are from that era),and have identical linkage. im not trying to argue, just wondering what i really have.which tcase did the ranger use? that may be part of my confusion.
