1987 4x4 TOD transmission info

I just purchased a 4x4 87 F150. It has the 4.9 I6 and, from what I gather, the TOD manual trans. I'm hoping to change the fluid in it soon, but I'm not sure what it needs.. Any info at all on this tranny would be awesome! Thanks

That's a rare trans - read this caption & follow the links to ID your trans:

This shows the correct fluid, but you should invest in a red-cover (old edition) Haynes & read it cover-to-cover:

Pretty weak unit only behind the 300 and 302. Replacement of the weaker SROD in '84, but replaced with the better M5OD-R2 in '88.

Thanks for the replies. The sticker on the door shows trans code B.. Pretty disappointed to hear it's a weak trans. My old '90 had the M5OD, and that never gave me any problems. So far my biggest complaint about the TOD is the gear ratios! It's almost like it wasn't designed for the 300. You have to wind it out in 2nd if you want it to have any power when you hit 3rd. Otherwise it bogs right down... But anyhow, I think I'll try to get some pics of the whole works on here soon.

Don't be too disappointed - the Mazda stick had more than its share of complaints. If you want to swap it in, though, it wouldn't be very difficult since it was offered in that body with that engine.

The chart I use is very confusing - it shows both standard 75W90 gear lube and ATF for all models of manual transmissions in an 87! Can you sample or drain a bit and see what it has in it now?

It's simple really.
Ball bearings = gear lube
Needle bearings = ATF
