1992 4x4 engaing problems..please help
 
Hey Guys and Gals!
Im a noob here on this message board, however I am pretty active on cafords.com.
anyways, I just purchased a 1992 Ford XLT 4X4 F-150, 137k miles,.. Fuel injected 351 Windsor engine, 4sp OD automatic, automatic locking front hubs with front diff. BUT I tested out the 4x4 (electronic) and it seems not to work. When I press on the button I can hear something click and it does not go into 4x4 or even 4low. Also, the 4x4 light does not turn on. I pressed the button like 20 times but still no indication that the 4x4 is working.

Any suggestion what it might be?

your transfer case has a shift motor on the push button models. if not shifted regularly the tend to freeze up.most of the time you have to replace the unit. i shift my through high and low every once and a while to keep the motor from doing this.

It is called an electric shift motor. It is mounted on the rear of the transfer case. There are other things that can be checked before replacing this motor, but if you do hear an audible click when trying to shift the motor should be getting call to shift.

I went under the truck today and I found a couple of things... Both good and bad.

1. the tranny is leaking, now i gotta find a shop to change the gaskets. (I only have basic tools)
2. one of the cats have holes...yeah holes. I guess the original owner wanted a deeper sound?


Also, people have told me that it may be a actuator problem. Is the actuator same as the shift motor?

I'm not sure if they are the same. There are several things that go on before the motor actually shifts the transfer case. I would say if you are hearing a click coming from the relay then its you shifting motor.

The system is called ESOF (Electronic Shift-On-the-Fly), and yes: the motor is the actuator. But before spending any money, spend some time reading this caption & testing your current parts. The motors commonly seize if not used, and they're easy to rebuild at home.

"Shift From 2H to 4H Results in Chatter and Clicking Noises From The Module, But No Shift

Typically, in this situation the motor hunts for 4H, but overshoots, then hunts back and overshoots the other way. After 7-10 seconds, with lots of clicks and chatter, the module gives up and returns to the default, which is 2H. This problem is normally not the sensor input. It is usually the result of the motor running too fast or braking too slowly to allow the module to position it accurately. The motor must be replaced."
