1993 SD to MAF conversion

I have done a good amount of searching through this site and a few other places, and nowhere do I find a good write-up on this conversion using parts from a donor vehicle. If anyone knows where theres a good write-up, please shoot the link. My biggest issue is pin out changes, and creating a small harness for the Mass Air Sensor. I have the pigtail from the donor truck, the engine harness, and a 1989 'Stang A9L computer. I just want to make sure I'm armed properly with info before tearing into the truck. By the way, this is going to be done to a 1993 F-150, 302, AOD. Thanks in advance.

Here is what I used when I did mine:

You will also need the '89 mustang EECIV CEL codes. There is a link to it on one of the FFI pages above. I have more info if you need it. This should get you started.

I have two additional suggestions.
1) Before you start the project, get a cheap A/F gauge from summit racing ($29 or $39) and run it for a couple of weeks before your conversion. That will give you an idea of the A/F that you may need to adjust to.
2) Come up with a scheme for water proofing/protecting the computer/harness connector for after you're done.

Good luck,
Lance

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks. The links were very helpful.

Just wondering, but why the conversion to MAF?

There are four reasons:

1) Slightly better mileage - I get a 1.5 mpg bump in city traffic here in LA. Sometimes I get up to 17mpg. I've never measured highway mpg.

2) Quicker acceleration - The mustang computer has a higher timing advancement table. I can keep up with the newer trucks from a standing start or getting on the freeway. Not that I try to, but I can.

3) Basis for future changes - Our old SD systems can only guess the amount of air that is consumed by the engined based on the values hard-coded in the computer. The MAF system actually measures the amount of airgoing into the engine and therefore can measure out the exact amount of gas needed. And changes to manifolds cams, heads, over-boring, or forced induction will change the amount of air consumed and may push the usage beyond the SD computer's "understanding". You can put in a more "wild" cam if you wanted or build a "stoker".

4) Age related changes - Just like point 3 the MAF can better measure changes in the engine air consumption than the SD system. THe MAF will age more gracefully.

Good deal. Nice to know you have real reasons for the swap.

olds442111 01-05-2010 10:59 PM

I intend to do the mass air conversion at the same time as a cam swap, exhaust, etc. Thats my reasoning for it. After printing / studying the diagrams, and changes to pin-out needed, I'm without any doubts or questions at this point. Moving right along.....

Do MAF conversion first. That way you have only one variable at a time.

That's free advice. You get what you pay for. ;)

Do you have any pictures of your olds?

olds442111 01-07-2010 07:06 PM

Yes I do. I'll get em on this machine and post them

lmd91343 01-07-2010 11:23 PM

I'm looking forward to it.

A biggy for me is that injection goes from EFI to SEFI!!!!(but you can't use the original EFI Injector harness)

Ok so I now have the engine harness, maf sensor off the 95 F-150 and the Mustang, the mustang computer, and ordered the E303 Ford Racing camshaft. About to modify the harness for the new firing order. While the engine is opened up, going to install new main bearings, rob bearings, oil and water pumps. This is going to be a fun lil project. Also going with Motorsport "shorty" headers.

Take pictures on the way. Let us watch.
