1994 F150 Oil Leak

I have a 94 F150 XL 2WD 4.9L. My question is I have a rear main oil leak. Also a oil pan gasket protruding from pan in places. I have been told that chainging the rear main seal is not easy, because of having to jack up engine to clear oil pan from engine. Is there a easier way of changing seal or using a seal leak formula? Also is this a common problem for this engine? Never had any problems with truck besides having to check engine oil level weekly and cleaning up mess on driveway. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

It's a helluvalot easier to change an I6 pan gasket than on a V8. But to do the rear main, the trans has to come out.

The oil pan does NOT have to be removed. Just unbolt it and let it lay on the frame. The gasket is rubber and can be "peeled" out around the pan. Just make sure all the little washers aren't stuck to the block. The new gasket can be stretched around the pan and reinstalled. Takes me about 45 minutes to do one. That is with a lift of course. The rear main is a one piece and the trans has to be pulled to access.

On a V8, it MIGHT be worth fighting the gasket with the pan resting on the frame. But on an I6, it's too easy to work the pan out & back in.
