Pinging/Detonation Gone! (I think)
I was experiencing pinging in my 1996 F150 5.0 4x2 w/60k miles when accelerating up hills or towing at highway speeds. I was hoping that a superchip and the premium fuel would solve the problem, but it didn't (I love the chip though). I figured at 60k miles it was time for new plugs etc.
I got Motorsport 9mm wires from Summit (that was not a complete set), Motorsport distributor cap and rotor (which was exactly like the stock one), Motorcraft platinum plugs, and Motorsport seperators to finish it up.
The old plugs were in pretty good shape, though the gap had increased to .55 (they were also platinum). The old cap and rotor were badly coroded and the pitted at the contacts. In my opinion this is were the problems occured, although it may have been the wires as well.
After replacing everything I took it for a test drive and accelerated around cars and up bridges at hwy speed (65-80) and there was absolutely NO pinging. Although I have not towed, I do not expect a problem there either. I am so excited that I do not have to go to the dealer, I thought that it may have been my timing. I hope that this is helpful. -- Martin
PS -- Last summer I did the plugs and wires on my wife's car, I will now check her cap and rotor as well.

I've been having the same problem you described. I got a new cap and rotor on the way. I just changed the plugs & wires. If there is anything else that can suggest let me know.
