Yep, I've found that Oem battery's (esp. Ford) are better than aftermarket. Mine didn't blow a core till about spring of 97. I have had two Exide 850cca's since, and they arn't anything great.

I too still have the original Motorcraft battery in my 1996 F-150. I don't know about any of the test you did, but you'll have to share your record with me. I hope that I have not jinxed the battery by bragging on it. -- Martin

Hello MWKellner: The test I do is to remove the two caps and check the water level and if necessary add DISTILLED water. I also have a specific gravity suction tube that I suck up water from each cell and see if all of the little ***** float to the top. They do. Also I place a volt meter across the two post and it always reads 12v or more.
I keep the entire battery very clean and every now and then spray it all over with clear silicone.

I don't believe in jinxes. I do believe in preventative maintenance. Things will not last forever but with proper care they will last a long time.

I have made a "preimptive" strike and checked out new batteries. The best I found so far is the Auto Zone battery that has a free two year replacement guarantee. All other batteries offer only one year free replacement. This battery is made by Johnston Controls.

Talking Batteries

Hello: I purchased my new 1996 F-150 in Sept. 1996. I still have my original Ford battery that was in the truck new.

Now after four years my battery is still good. The sight window is still bright green. The volts are still up to specs. The specific gravity is still up to specs.

Is this some kind of record?
