Post Super Engine Cooling--351 vs 302

I talked to my Ford parts department today about getting Super Engine cooling on my truck--either as equipped (302) or as planned (351w).

I was told that for the '91 models, Super Engine Cooling (larger radiator) was only available with the E4OD transmission. Super Engine Cooling is available for the 302 with AOD, as in my truck as it currently stands.

Question is, if I go ahead and get Super Engine Cooling for my 302 with AOD, will it be sufficient for the planned 351w upgrade (with AOD)? I have no idea of any differences between SEC for the 351 vs SEC for the 302.

Thanks,

Mike

Hopefully Ford has built in some extra cooling capacity into the 302 system, cause that bigger engine will generate more heat.

How big is the radiator in the vehicle your 351W is coming out of? If its a lot larger than the 302 radiator, can you get the 351 radiator and put it into the truck? If its the same size as the 302 radiator, you may be in luck.

Hopefully, since it is a work truck, Ford makes the radiators bigger than they need to, and yours will handle the bigger engine

You and Pastmaster should compare notes - I think he plans on putting in a 351 into his '89 (original engine is a 302).

Are you sure about that one Mike? My 89 has the 302 and the Aod, and it has the largest radiator too.... My buddy has a 92 Flareside 4x4 with the 351 and E40d, and he has the same radiator as both of mine, although the thermostat temp may be different.

Dave, I was thinking about it along time ago, didn't know when I was going to do it, forgot about it, and Mike here, made me remember it...

This is all according to my parts shop at Ford... They care as much about what I do to my truck as I care about the price of eggs in China.

Hey, if you know that a radiator for a 351w with E4OD will fit (and work) with the 302/AOD combination, please let me know...

The rebuilt engine could be coming from anything... A Crown Vic or a truck... I won't know (although I'll request the block out of a truck.) So we're back to square 1 as far as the radiator issue. I doubt the engine shop even knows for sure what blocks come from where.

The '89 I test drove had a C-6--not an E4OD. It had a heavy duty radiator (at least I think it did--the guy pulled a fifth wheel with it!) Unless Ford made some changes to the bolt pattern, I don't see why the super engine cooling for the 351W wouldn't work with the 302... I know the standard cooling is insufficient for towing in hills or even for hard acceleration--the truck heats up a little under a heavy foot.

Pastmaster, if you get some time, I'd surely appreciate it if you could find anything out on this--and would love to exchange ideas about your planned 351 swap. Computer issues are bugging me...

Thanks (again),
-Mike

My '93 F150 had the trailer towing package with super engine cooling. The radiator was huge and had 3 or 4 rows. I could idle all day in traffic with the a/c on in 100 degree weather w/o any problem. No doubt in my mind that the radiator could handle a 351. In fact, I think it was the same radiator in the 351. I believe the main difference between the regular radiator and the super radiator was the number of rows. Std radiator had 1 or two and the super radiator had 3 or 4. BTW, you can take your std 1 or 2 row radiator to a radiator shop and have them put a 3 or 4 row core in it.

I wish the current models came with 3 or 4 row cores. Regular cooling in in current models is on row and super is 2.

Tenderpaw is correct...It is the same! either of mine, even on Max Ac, wouldn't go above the N. As long as you have good hoses, good thermostat, and the right mixture for antifreeze, I wouldn't worry a bit...

No prob, I always planned a build, just didn't know when, and after you mentioned it, I thought about it again, and you know the rest,

I am going to ask some mechanic friends this weekend about your enginem and see if they have any input...

Thanks for your replies... I am going to go ahead and order the super engine cooling for my truck sometime this month... Have some towing to do in the mts, so this old thing is going to get a test...

Yeah, I do endurance horseback riding, but I don't want to give my 20 year old Arab a 350 mile workout if this truck breaks...
