7.5L 460 in my 1995 F-150 ...... Looking for ideas and comments.

Hey guys, I'm planning a fairly major engine swap soon. I am contemplating dropping a 460 EFI in place of my 302. I do not believe getting the engine to fit will cause problems, but I worry about it mating with the E40D. Can anyone give me some concrete facts on that, or does it only work with the C6? Thanks guys, I'm looking for ANY comments you might have.

My facts are not to concrete. But I can tell you that my truck has a 460 with the E40D. I do not have a C6. So I figure it shouldn't be a problem using an E40D, you will probably have to change the bellhousing if you are using the same tranny that is hooked to the 302.

Anyone care to guess at some possible performance from this combination? MPG and 1/4?

mjordan44 01-17-2000 07:18 PM

I can tell you my mileage, 10 - 13 , this is city - highway.

Yours may be different, I had my truck weighted at a truck stop and it is 6100 lbs.

I have no idea what the 1/4 time would be. I have never raced it. Sure I have jumped on it , but never timed it.

Your truck will be lighter, is it a 4x4?

Why not do what I'm doing? It will probably cost the same in the long run, anyhow, and you'll have an easier time than trying to put a 460 into a truck that wasn't intended to take a 460.

Put a nice exhaust on your 302, get a performance rebuild, then supercharge it.
You'll be looking at 300+ horsepower AND better mpg than you'll get with a 460. The
supercharger will probably come with a better intake, computer program, and ignition system.

Not to mention this is an easier project and a lighter truck...

The C-6 was one of fords finest Autos. Unfortunately Ford killed it in 1991. I think they killed it in the F-150's when the E40d came in to the F-150's (1990). I have yet to see a tranny live up to its reputation.

Jason Zaluski 01-17-2000 09:22 PM

mjordan: It is a 2wd..... and I currently get 10 MPG with my 302.

Mike: I already have done exhaust, and a few other mods... but I really wanna be different, and just have BRUTE power.. and don't you worry, that 460 will be seeing a Super.

Another thing Jason, you better keep in mind is the coils. I have seen a 79 F-150 with a 460, and it looks like a low rider in the front. My 93 looks almost the same way.

Hey... I'm waiting for my warranty to run out before I do this. Is my best bet to buy a wrecked F-350 or F-250... and build up the engine while I wait?

I don't think that the 460's engine mounts and the 302's engine mounts are in the same place, so you would have to buy/build mounts for that. The 460 is a big block so the bellhousing is different. You might just get another tranny instead. I don't know how easy bell housings are to get. Of course, the computer, wiring, radiator are NOT enough, so you would have to get that. My suggestion is to find a donor truck.

Tenderpaw 01-18-2000 08:37 AM

Your best bet is to by a wrecked truck with a 460 and E4OD trans. Your 302 E4OD will not work because the bell housing is different and you can't change the bell housing. Its integral with the trans case. Mounting the engine may take some creativity, because the frames on 1 ton trucks are different than on 1/2 tons. There also may be a kit available to mount the engine. Contact L & L products. They make a lot of kits to put 460's in different things and can probably help you. BTW, I have experienced 16 MPG in an '89 F250 w/ 460 and E4OD in straight hiway driving at 65 MPH. I have experienced 15 MPG in a '94 E350 with a 460 and E4OD in straight hiway driving at 65 MPH. Both vehicles have 3.55 gears. I think that you could get at least that milage in a lighter 1/2 ton. If you are only gettin 10 MPG now, there is something wrong with your engine.

Tenderpaw,

was either of the trucks you had a 4x4? The best I have gotten with my 460 is 13.79 MPG. This was also highway at 65 with the cruise on.

Well, keep us posted on your progress... I might just be convinced to do what you're doing! <grin>

Will be very interested to see how this project shapes up.

G'luck!

I'd like to thank ALL of you for your responses. Please keep the coming, as I still have a LOT ahead. I appreciate all you have done. I am currently on the lookout for a low milage wrecked 350 or 250 with 460 EFI. If anyones seen a good deal, please let me know.

I am a web developer for a living, and I will be posting a site dedicated to this project, so you all can experience my trials and problems.

Thanks... keep the input rolling!

Damn, 16mpg's? My dad's 91 never got above 14 un-loaded and never above 9 loaded. Your dad must have a good engine Tenderpaw!
