belt alignment

ok, i took a straight edge and put it on my smog and it is one groove out to far. which would be a good reason why my belt is one groove out on the crank, but, does that just mean my sog is bad or what, its an 88 with a 302 and it has surpentine belts, so it should be aligned reguardless right?

If you belt is one groove out on the crank, you need to take the tension off the tightener and push the belt on that one groove. The directions on how to relieve pressure on the tensioner should be on a decal right in that area. Make sure the belt is on the correct groove on all the pulleys. I would think eyeballing the alignment of the pulleys would work better than a straightedge in this case.
