91 f150 exhaust help

My 91 f150 xlt lariat developed an exhaust leak and instead of going with a stock muffler i was wondering what muffler that was cheap would actually sound good on a 4.9l i-6 300. I dont want to loose any performance but i just want a little more of a aggressive sound. Oh yeah and one(if not both) of my cats are going, so i can hear the catalyst breaking apart and rattling so what type of catalytic converter can i replace my stock ones with, like i said i dont wanna lose any performance. Thanks guys!

Perhaps other members can relate success stories. Only experience I've had with putting mufflers on an inline six, be it the Ford 300 or the Jeep 258, is that it ends up sounding like a very mad John Deere tractor.

With good cats (I didn't realize there were two on the L6) in place I doubt if the exhaust will make much noise anyway. I'm sure you have pollution laws in your state so you can't just gut the cats. When the muffler went bad on my '88 F-150, 300 L6, it was completely busted off at the inlet, it wasn't all that noisy.

they make nice performance cats... they should be pretty easy to find online... also, flow master or dynomax makes good mufflers that can add alittle proformance along with a good sound... i would definatly take it somewhere to put them on though, you want to weld them in... you will get popping on deceleration if you have leakes using clamps.

good luck.

Idk, I've gotta I6 w/ two cats and no muffler (dumping straight outta the second cat) and it gives me a freaking splitting headache, it pisses the whole neighborhood off, but, if i put 2ft of exhaust pipe on, the things is a ton quieter. And I heard this cat is pretty good, you can actually get away with replacing both of the stock cats with this one. Its a Catco 9513.
