Transmission problem question

I have a 91 F150, 5.0 Liter. With what I believe is a E4OD tranny. (4 speed auto with press button 4wd)

After about 50 miles of driving today I pulled into my apartment complex, slowed down for a speed bump, and when I hit the gas all I got was the engine revving.

Like being in neutral.

So I slapped the stick down to 2nd and the tranny did engage. Though I had a high pitch whistle.

Once I put it back into Drive... it all worked.

But what are potential causes for slipping out of gear? The whistle makes me thing it could be a vaccum issue.

Thanks,
Alloy

Could be the shift lever wasn't in the "locked" position, and the shock of the bump caused it to slip out...... when was the last time the linkage was lubed?

yeah, the whistling thing is something of concern. Sloppy / worn linkage is certainly something to look at.

Other than that, go for the easy stuff first - how's the fluid level, and how does it look? Blood red is great, ***** brown is really bad.

How many miles and how hard has it been driven over its life? Automatics last a long time, but not forever. Worst cast, may be time for a rebuild.

hey, there should have only been 4 **** in that censorship for fecal excretion!

The truck is sitting at 183K miles. Of couse if you know anything about rolling Mileage back.... the analog numbers will be crooked and not lined up anymore. which mine are

So I really think I'm sitting at over 200k. But can't confirm that.

I changed the fluid and the filter about a 1.5 years ago. The shift linkage has never been greased by me... so it has probably never been done.

If anything the tranny is probably on it's way out!
