6spd w/ a 351w

As some of you may know i just recently purchased a 92 4x4 with a 351w and E4OD tranny. I was just curious about the posibility of changing the tranny to a newer 6 spd out of a super duty. i know it could take alot of fabbing for brackets and driveshafts. but what about mating it to the 351. is there a kit for something like this? Will it work ok with 3.55 gears? i just think it would be a unique idea. Any thoughts? BTW what is the name of the 6 spd?

Not able to help you, but that is a great idea. I could easily lay my hands o a 6 speed as well.........I'm intersted in hearing how this could turn out.

Converting from auto to manual isn't all that easy on EFI trucks. Aside from the obvious stuff like the tranny, clutch and flywheel, pedal assy, etc. you would also have to replace the processor and the powertrain wiring harness.

Converting to the ZF 6S-650 would be particularly difficult. It has an integral bellousing which is configured to match the mod motors. It does not bolt up to the SBF. AFAIK nobody makes an adaptor. In addition, the 6S-650 has an internal lube pump and requires an oil cooler so you'd need to find a place to mount that. I'm pretty sure that your transfer case will bolt up. If not then the T/C from the ZF donor might work, but the front driveshaft location might not be the same

As always, anything can be done if you have enough time, money and resources

It's not necessary to replace the EEC when swapping from slushbox to stick. The missing trans WILL set fault codes, but they DON'T turn on the CEL or cause any driveability issues.

Swapping in the clutch isn't much harder than doing a regular clutch job. Plenty of people on FSB have done it, so do some searching & reading over there.

But I agree - there's no way to put a modular trans. in.

Correct. Only overdrive sticks yer gonna get to directly bolt up is a

ZF S5-42 from a '88-'96 F-2/350+ with the 351w
ZF S5-47 from a '96-'97 F-2/350+ with the 351w
Mazda M5OD-R2 from a '88-'96 F-150/Bronco with a 300/302

The six speeds were only cast with the 4.6L/5.4L/6.8L/6.0L pattern and the 7.3L pattern.
