Question welding on truck

I want to add some beef on the bumper. What's the proper procedure of grounding; i.e. battery disconnect, welder ground location, etc, to cause no damage to any electronics or other things...

Stick welder= unhook the battery
MIG welder= choice is yours
TIG welder= unhook the battery

I built my pre-runner bar right on my truck with a MIG and never unhooked the battery.

The high freq. of YIG may damage computers
The inconsistant pulses from a stick may cause damage to computers

Unhook the battery and clqamp your ground cable as close to the weld site as possible.

Nothin would happen prolly, but why chance your computer. Takes me 10 seconds to disconnect the positive cable.

What he said, i've welded on trucks with the battery connected with all kinds of welders without any problems, but i only do that in emergencies, i always unhook the battery if possible. It takes 5 minutes to hook the negative battery cable back up and reset your radio and clock, thats a lot easier than buying a $500 computer.

Grind all the rust or paint off the frame close to where you will be working and hook the ground cable there.

I've welded the exhaust on mine and didn't bother with battery cables or anything, just had the ground somewhat near where i was welding. But with the bumper, if in the front, would be a definate disconnect at the battery for me, too close to the engine. I'm also working with older trucks though....
