I just figured mine out the other day. I based it on several fill-ups, since Labor Day, including freeway driving and around town driving, and my results were just under 13 mpg. Now, it's worth mentioning that my truck is loaded down with tools, and weighs in around 6000 pounds. Also, I drive it pretty hard.

96/300/E4OD/RegCab/6.5' bed
With 3.08: gears, 29" tires, empty with no tonneau 19.5 highway/14.5 city
With 3.73 gears, 30" tires, empty with no tonneau 16.5 highway/15.5 city
With 3.73 gears, 30" tires, empty with tonneau 18.5 highway/15.5 city
With 3.73 gears, 30" tires, pulling a 2500# trailer with tonneau 15.5 highway

Obviously, YMMV

I would expect an improvement of about 0.5 -1.0 MPG with an M5OD and the next taller rear gear ratio in each case in order to get the same overall reduction in OD. That means a 2.73 in place of the 3.08 and a 3.55 in place of the 3.73

I haven't figured it out exactly in a long time, but roughly just over 13, all city driving.

We sold one earlier this year. '90 XLT shortbed, 5-speed, 205k miles. My Dad was getting about 14-16 average out of it, typically with a decent load of tools or other goods (he was his own contractor when we remodeled the house) in the back. Pretty good mileage if I do say so...good truck too.

I still average in the mid to high teens.... sometimes worse but not often... with my amount of miles ( over 230K ) I'm happy....and no payment!

just looking through here about to post

I have a '91 I6 w/5-sp man.
short bed 2-wheel drive.

I have only been getting around 11mpg.
i mostly drive the interstate to work with a little bit of city here and there.
I feel i should be getting much better than this.
The fuel system was cleaned, new plugs, in the last two months (just got it)
also, had it at the ford dealer to take care of some old recall stuff on these, they said the truck was fine.
Any ideas? i feel i should be getting at least 15.......

what's the flowmaster??

Used to have a '77 F-150 with factory 460 4V, C-6 auto, and 2.75 gears that got 17 mpg highway. That's with no overdrive, no fuel injection, and a body that was as aerodynamic as a billboard. So much for progress!

HOLY CRAPOLA! There's your mpg right there! What RPMS was it up to at 60 mph? Like 1200?
