Anyone tried to stuff a SOHC 6.8 in a pre-97 F150

Unbelieveable as it sounds I have the opportunity to pick up a SOHC 6.8 with all accessories, wiring, tranny, and transfer case for around $500. It came out of a wreck but the engine didn't take any damage. The owner did tell me about a low end knock that I will need to check out though. Most likely new bearings for the bottom end and a crank polish will take care of it. I don't have the computer yet but the wiring and electronics will be the easier part for me to figure out. I'm really just wondering if it will fit? I'm not concerned with the mounts for the engine at this point but more about how to control the automatic tranny and the transfer case. The truck I'd like to basterdize with this project is an 89 F150 4X4 longbed. Lemme know what you think.

Cool! If you get every and I mean EVERY sensor and control it would work. One problem I see is that after 92, the speed sensor for everything comes from a tone ring on the rear diff, which your 89 wouldnt have. Might be a good idea to try to get a Dana 60 rear end for all that power and take care of the tone ring issue.

Thumbs up

Shouldn't be that bad of a swap provided you get the ENTIRE harness with it intact. You'll need to see if the VSS is in the back of that trans... or elsewhere.

The trans will be controlled by the PCM as will the transfer case, you'll have to setup a push button for the TC and an OD lockout for the auto. Auto TC's typically use ABS rings to sync up to shift into 4Hi... so something else to consider too.

I wouldn't do it, for the amount of time to dump it all in you could have a stronger and more efficient 392 in there that would run circles around that V10.

The bigger goal would be hauling my car / boat around. Hauling a$$ would just be another benefit but I'd prolly gear it down anyway. I'm still waiting to find out the exact year so I can pull specs.

I'd drop in a ZF6 tranny in there then you wouldn't have to worry about the auto headache. Just my .02, might be because I'm partial to a as Adrianspeeder calls it handshaker

The v-10 weighs how much?
Aside from shoehorning the thing in there, you might find yourself having to upgrade your suspension and brakes.

I was about to throw in a set of leveling coils for the the front anyway so it won't be too much concern to get a set made up to support this motor. I'm going to have to look into that manual tranny a little more. I prefer a manual but the truck is setup auto right now so I'm missing the all important clutch pedal and linkage. It's a thought though as I know it's not difficult to change over on my car, hopefully the truck can be just as easy. It would really depend on whether I could sell the auto for enough to get the manual and all the parts.

Not too much more than a 5.4L, which weighs about the same as a 4.6L.
