Bad Day for my 92 F150
 

So im drivin to school today as I do every other day, truck was runnin along fine when all of a sudden it stalls. I throw it in neutral and try to restart it without any luck. As Im cranking a few times I start to smell a not so very healthy for electronics smell and I get a puff of smoke coming out of my dash and around where the parking brake pedal is. Needless to say I stopped cranking it over and decided to go with AAA for the rest of the way home.

This sucks, I wont even get a chance to crack the dash open till next weekend to take a look at how bad it is. Luckily for me I picked up a camaro for a project about a month ago and its in street worthy shape at this point.

The truck is a 92 F150 with the 4.9 Inline 6. I know I havent given much info besides a non starting truck an a wonderful burning smell from around the fuse panel, but if any of you have any preliminary suggestions feel free to let me know, I dont have a clue at this point. Im guessing this is gonna turn out to be an expensive and pain in the ass fix. :mad:

Hmm lots of views but no responses yet. Anyways I finally got around to looking at it today and while trying to crank it over i got a nice shock through the key. Anyone had this happen before? I'm guessing thats where the problems is but i've never had this problem before so i dont know what the fix yet.

If you got shocked through the key, then you have a very serious problem. A 12 volt system doesn't create enough juice to shock you, other than via the coil, and if you got shocked at the key, from the coil, you're in deep doo doo.

i would recomend disconecting the battery to avoid a fire when your not working on it. Just to be on the safe side :thumbsup:

Well guys Im startin to get desperate on this one. I was told by a friend of mine that the problem may be a wire that goes from the ignition switch to the coil to tell it to send power to the distributor. I tried to jump this wire directly to the battery as he adivsed and still nothing. When I hooked the wire up the buzzer for the key went on for a few seconds but the truck would still not start. I don't think I heard the fuel pump priming as it usually does when you turn the key on either. If anyone who knows something about the wiring in these trucks could offer some suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

The area you describe (parking brake) is where the ECM/ECU is.
If you somehow smoked this, It ain't startin' no way no how.
I have smoked one before messing with a jet chip, Which may have taken out my PSOM as well. (live and learn).

Most junk yards have the part you need, ie: computer. If there are no local places, try www.car-parts.com. A great source for used parts from junk yards nation wide.

Need ECM for my F150
 

Well it looks like my computer is toast as was suggested. I pulled it today opened it up and the board is burnt up. I searched on carparts.com and it looks like its gonna cost me between 85 and 100 to replace it. If any of you guys has one of these sitting around for some reason, or has any other suggestions as to where to pick one up cheaper let me know.

Are you serious about finding an ECM for only $45? I'm presuming that's used, and not rebuilt, or warrantied, yes?

I got 3 for my 95. One from a local junk yard for $45.00, which had a bad oxygen sensor circuit in it, they took it back.
The other two off ebay. The first one for an automatic, $9.99. I picked it up just for a spare, not knowing I would need it within 3 months. It worked until I got another one for my exact application, paid $19.99 plus shipping. It's been working great ever since.

Probably $12.00 shipping. 1992 and 1993 used the same unit in some models. These units usually come with a 30 or 45 day guarantee, be sure to ask. They usually test them before shelling the truck. Hope this helps.
