5.8 liter vs. 5.0 liter
5.8 liter vs. 5.0 liter
hey there,
I have a few questions about the 5.8 liter compared to the 5.0 liter. First, about how much more powerful was the 5.8? and could u definetly tell the difference by driving the 5.8 then driving the 5.0? Also, if you put a flowmaster exhaust on, will the 5.8 be louder then the 5.0 or are they about the same? And finally a more general question, what makes car/trucks louder then others when it comes to after market exhaust? is it bigger pistons, point at when combustion stroke occurs, bigger exhaust pipes? Thanks for anyones help.

Matt...
351W had a good deal more torque than that 302... it's got an extra 0.5" stroke and that make it for a good truck motor. IMO that 302 shouldn't have been in them...
Could I tell a diff in stock form between a 351W and a 302 all else being equal? Hrm.. probably so.
They'd be about of equal sound with just a cat back.
All your sound goes away due to the cats, then the manifolds, then the heads. All block power and sound.
Remember loud doesn't always equal fast...

I would go with a 351. I installed a blower on my truck because I got a good deal on one. I did do a 351 swap on my mustang and you could tell by the sound that the engine breathed alot deaper. Exhaust sound was about the same except at higher RPM's and then it was louder, but from the car you could hear the noice of the intake alot as well. Many told me the car was louder though...they heard it. I have flow masters and off road H-pipe. I agree with the above, that 351's should have been standard in trucks just because of the extra torque. Thats my .02 cents....No Replacement for Displacement
Well this is an issue i have asked and been asked many times in the past.My dad has a 93 with a 302 and it always seemed to have suffient power until i got pack in my 94 with the 351 like thoose guys said the torque is where you really see the difference and to me they do seem to have a slightly different sound. But the 302 vs351 is one of the most asked questions among pre 97's and it really depends on what your using your truck for.If you do alot of towing or just love the extra stock power then the 351 is for you but if you want something to get your truck going down the road a bone stock 302 is fine (i know cause i've owned them both)
