Another 4.9 mileage?
 

Hey guys, I haven't had my truck very long but it seems to be using a lot of gas. The truck is a 96 F150 4 x4, LB reg cab, with the E40d trans (60K). I have the Warn lockouts and left them locked in for the mileage check; but with them locked in (snow last week) I went a whopping 86 miles and used 10.5 gals!!!! Thats barely 8mpg. I never even use the 4WD. I unlocked the hubs and will give it another try but I don't see how its going to bring the mpg up to where I want it, and expected it, to be: 15mpg. My driving is appx 85% highway driving (65mph) and I definitely don't rod it because this truck is slow as Methusala. BTW no running probs, CEL, obvious signs of a rich running condition. Is this normal fuel economy for this truck? Any suggestions? I think I will even convert to one of the tail gate down kind of guys even its only worth 1-2 mpg.

I get 11Mph in mine but that's because I got lower gears for 4-wheeling. I use to get 14-15. I think there have been studies that show having no tailgate reduces mileage but I'm not certain. What gear ratio do you have?

I'm currently getting 17mpg.

4.9L, Manual, 4x2, reg.cab, short bed, 3:31 rear on 31" tires.

Well I usually can get between 15-19mpg depending on how I drive and location ( city or highway ). I've got 31x10.50 BRG ATs and a 2.5" lift in the front but don't have the extra weight of the 4X4 system. I do have few minor mods but I've also got quite a bit of mileage. I'm happy and won't trade with the wife cause I get better mileage!

Oh yeah, I have the 3.55's that came with it and I'm running the stock sized tires I believe 275/60 R15's or whatever it came with. Unlocking the hubs seems to be helping but I'll have to wait and see on my next trip the pump. It reminds me of that old saying "It'll pass everything but a gas station"; except that for as lousy mileage as I'm getting I should have just found a 5.0 with a 5 speed. It's bad when my 89 5.0 Mustang with 3.73's and AOD trans, lightly modified gets about 16mpg combined. Oh well, maybe I can find a used Focus ZX3 to use as a commuter car?

I have 3.08 gears, 4X2, short bed/cabwith 31 inch tires, and automatice and get about 15 mostly in the city.

'86 BONE STOCK, CARBURATED 4x4..

12-15 mpg.. I could turn down my idle a bit, but don't have a tach, to determine how much..

I have a '92 f-150 with a 4.9, and a 5 speed manual transmission, 3.08 gears, and I get 15-16 in the city, and 19-22 on the highway.

I have a 1986 Ford E-150 van with a 4.9 I-6..the mileage is terrible..it's a lot heavier than your pickup. I don't know what rear end it has but I just have the stock tires on it...nothing done to it at all...it's a gas hog (about 9mpg) with auto trans and can't get out of it's own way. BUT it also has a pull-the-world frame hitch on it and when you hook it up to something, it pulls like you wouldn't believe. Never had any trouble pulling anything with that van but it doesn't pass many gas stations.

I used to work for a church as a youth director in college, they have a 1989 Ford E-350 with the 4.9... on the 600 mile ski trips it was like drinking gas like crazy was it's job.

If I'm careful with my '94 I6 2WD then I get 12-15 miles/ US Gallon. If I take it over 3000 RPM in the city (guessing by engine noise, no tach) or 100KPH / 60MPH on the highway then fuel consumption goes through the roof.

The last few tanks were running in no warmer than -10C weather. I don't know if that makes a difference
