It's an 8.8 with reverse rotation gears.
Forget Summit. Call a company like Reider Racing or equivalent. Someone that knows differentials. I have Precision Gear sets. Good gears, but I think I would install either SVO or Motive if I were to do it again. Precision Gears are plenty tuff, but I think the finish machining, lapping, etc. is better on the SVO or Motive. That would translate to a little quieter running gear. And possibly a little less heat. ------------------ 98 F-150 XLT 4X4 ORP Super Cab Short Bed, 4.6, Auto, 4.10's, Mag-Hytec diff. cover, Magnacharger supercharger, K&N FIPK, Superchip, Gibson single cat-back, 80/100w German head lamps, 80w amber fog lamps, Warn HS9500i winch with semi hidden mount, Wrangler dual battery kit with red & yellow top Optima batteries, 285/75R16 Goodyear MT/R's, 16x8 Center Line Hell Cats (JUNK WHEELS), Rancho RSX shocks, B&M deep aluminum trans pan, Rhino bedliner. What's the Diff.
O.K. I am sure that this has been on here before, but what kind is the front axle in a 98 4x4? The guy at the dealer claims it to be an 8.8 and the summit rep. says it is a Dana 44. What is it, getting rready to swap out the NOISEY factory Ford 3:55s' for 4:10s'. Any input would be great.

JEFF3021,
You have a flipped lincoln 8.8 differential in the front. You will need reverse cut gears. Ford racing makes a 3.73 or a 4.10 reverse cut gear for this setup. Richmond gear also make gears. Check out http://www.ring-pinion.com/index.html They are very competetive and quite knowledgeable. thanks guys for all the info. I will be installing the 4:10 gears next weekend, hopefully this will eliminate the gear whine and give me that little extra kick in the shorts that the little 4.6 needs to push the 305s' around.

This is along the same topic, and I was hoping you'll could help me out. I have a 97 4x4 4.6l 5speed, and I am looking for some additoinal power. I rarely tow anything, and I was wondering if I could change out the gears...whatever it takes to get some more ummfffff if you know what I mean. I have already bought a couple engine and exhaust mods, so now I am looking into my trany and such. Please advise with info, prices, rumors, whatever you'll know about.
