Angry Update on Diff whine

Thought I would post an update on my diff. whine problem...50k mainly on highway, on a 2000 F150 4x4 Supercab, XLT, Off Road, 5.4L, 8.8 hypoid diff 3.55 LS

Dropped my truck off at dealer on Sat. morning for evaluation/diagnosis. Estimate of $81.84 to evaluate. Waited all day Saturday with no call. Called Sunday and truck had not been looked at, and they told me that "those guys" weren't around to look at it, but would get right on it Monday morning. Called Monday morning and was told they'd call me back. Called Monday afternoon and was told the guy who would be looking at it worked at night. Finally got a call at about 4:30pm.

At that time I was told that it sounded like my pinion bearing, and possibly my left axle bearing. They then told me to hold on cuz' it wouldn't be cheap. Their estimate was for $1700.00, but they couldn't be positive until they opened her up. They then asked me for the go ahead to start working on my truck, with a cost not to exceed $1700.00. Stunned, and with my truck my main transportation as an outside sales rep, I agreed.

I went home, thought it over, called back the dealer and told them to hold off any work until I could think about it rationally. I then realized that for $1700 I could probably get a brand new diff that was a better than factory model. I relayed this to the tech and he started backtracking quickly. "Well, we don't KNOW that it will cost that much." No, but they wanted a blanket go-ahead to work up to that limit. Hmmm... I WONDER how much the final bill would be.

I then called my cousin, a former mechanic trained at one of the tech schools the dealers get their fresh guys at. He referred me to a local Off-road reputable mechanic that many off his 4x4 buddies use about 4 miles from my house. Leonard immediately knew of this issue, and without even looking up the parts was able to give me a cost run down of all the parts likely needed. For pinion bearing, collar, nut, crush sleeve, and Us Forged gears, Lube, conditioner, cups, side bearings and labor, he quoted $540.00. That would be if he had to do everything. The dealer said the bearing axle on the left might be out as well, so I asked him to price out new axle bearings, and new shafts (both sides, not just one) just in case. Just over $800.00 complete.

Bear in mind that these are FORGED gears, not cast like the ones used from the factory.

I love my Truck. I feel sick to my stomach about the dealer. 50k and a diff going out? I'm a sales rep for crying out loud, not a whole lot of 4x going on here except for steep boat ramps, and the snow over the passes once a month or so. By the way, my LS has shuddered on turns from a stop from the moment I got my truck. I'd say that the rear diff. seems to be an issue.

IMHO stay away from Thomason Ford of Beaverton, Oregon. My friend has had good luck with Courtesy Ford in Portland. My wifes car is from Landmark Ford, and they have treated us well also. I guess it just depends on which dealer you get stuck with.

Hey Mike, I don't think it will be anything more than the pinion bearings, but who knows. Sounds like the local shop is the way to go. Good luck!

So what is it you sell?

a traveling I will go

Hey Keith,

I'm a manufactures rep for commercial mechanical plumbing products. We rep large boilers, commercial piping systems, a line of products by Zurn Industries that includes flush valves, faucets, backflow preventors, and cast iron drainage products. I also rep a pipe hanger and seismic bracing company. With that manufacturer I work with large projects such as water treatment plants, and high-tech fabs such as Intel production facilities here in Oregon. I travel the entire state of Oregon and put on about 35k a year of mainly highway travel.

Thanks again for the input Keith!
