2013 Power steering assist failure
 

I have a 2013 EcoBoost 47,000 miles. Recently when I turned my steering all the way to the right I hear the power assist making a squealing sound. Then I got the the following alarms on the dash- "Power steering assist failure" and "Service advance trac". I was playing with it trying to record a video to post and now lost all power steering. Do I need to replace the rack and pinion? How hard is it?

Probably the cheapest place to get a new rack would be RockAuto... they got them there for $920...

Recommended to pull software off PSCM before disassembly and uploading to replacement unit.

It's electric power steering.

I know that but I didn't know that it was all computerized. I thought that they just drove it from an electrically powered pump instead of the engine driven pump. But NOOO! Somebody decided to make a computer out of it!

I did some reading on the subject last night and Ford did eventually recall and replace over 400,000 of the EPS but not on the F150 as far as I can tell. Also there was a class action lawsuit filed against Ford but it was dismissing for a technical reason in 2017 and an appeal is supposed to be in the works.

Has anyone dissected one of the failed units and figured out exactly what the problem is? There are two different Ford EPS, one has a built in steering wheel torque sensor and the other has the sensor in the steering column. The torque sensor used in the column is a known high failure rate item but I don't know if that the source of the problem in the EPS that use the built in sensor.
